The elegance and richness of a classified Sauternes Premier Cru

  • Château Rieussec, classified Premier Cru in 1855, sits at the heart of Sauternes. Its gravelly terroir benefits from morning mists at the confluence of the Ciron and Garonne, fostering noble rot that concentrates the grapes' sugars and imparts distinctive richness.
  • Sémillon provides the wine's unctuous depth, whilst Sauvignon Blanc contributes freshness and citrus notes. Muscadelle adds subtle floral aromatics. The result is a wine of considerable aromatic complexity, balancing sweetness with brightness.
  • A wine of exceptional character, recognised in the Guide Hachette 2020, offering impressive ageing potential that will deepen further with time.

In the mouth
Rich, unctuous and elegant on the palate. Candied fruit flavours (apricot, peach), honey and marmalade meld with exotic notes and floral spice. The finish is lengthy, fresh and gently tart, with mineral precision that balances the wine's inherent sweetness.
On the nose
Intense and complex bouquet: exotic fruits (mango, pineapple), candied citrus, honey and white flowers, with hints of vanilla and saffron
On the eye
Deep golden robe, brilliant and luminous
Breeding
Aged in oak barrels for 18 to 24 months, with a substantial proportion of new wood, imparting vanilla, spice and toasted oak aromas whilst respecting the wine's natural richness
M. Francois
Château Rieussec represents Sauternes at its finest: a liquorous wine of power, sweetness and refinement. Its impressive structure suits foie gras, blue cheeses and desserts featuring exotic fruit or citrus. The perfect balance between sugar-rich concentration and refreshing acidity will appeal to those seeking complexity in a moelleux. Considerable cellaring potential ensures this wine will gain further depth and nuance over the coming years.

CHATEAU RIEUSSEC

Set on the slopes of Fargues in the Gironde, Château Rieussec is a Premier Cru Classé Sauternes spanning 85 hectares of sandy-gravelly soils above the Garonne. Once the property of the Carmelite monks of Langon, it was classified in 1855 and acquired in 1984 by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), whose stewardship has brought remarkable consistency to the estate. Its rich, complex whites — drawn from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle — represent Sauternes at its most precise. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the reliability of its vintages and the enduring legitimacy of its 1855 classification. A cornerstone reference for lovers of great Bordeaux liquoreux.
