A plateau terroir and a pioneer's legacy

The château takes its name from Albert Macquin (1852–1911), one of the most consequential figures in late nineteenth-century Bordeaux viticulture. It was Macquin who systematically introduced phylloxera-resistant grafting techniques across Saint-Émilion, effectively saving the appellation's vineyards from the devastation that had swept through France. His name remains inseparable from the history of the right bank. The estate he established in 1887 has been in the hands of the Corre-Macquin family — Benoît Corre, Bruno Corre, and Marie-Jacques Charpentier — since 1994, when they engaged Nicolas Thienpont as manager alongside consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt. Together, they undertook a thorough repositioning of the vineyard: tighter canopy management, sharply reduced yields, and a renewed focus on expressing the plateau's singular geology.

Terroir: clay-limestone at altitude

The vineyard sits on the plateau culminant of Saint-Émilion, at elevations ranging from 75 to 100 metres — among the highest positions in the appellation. The soils are argilo-calcaire (clay-limestone) resting directly on starred limestone bedrock (calcaire à astéries), a formation that delivers both excellent drainage and a natural mineral tension that marks the wines. The encépagement is led by Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and a smaller proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon — a blend well suited to the freshness and structure that this elevated plateau site naturally provides.

Responsible viticulture: HVE certification

Château Pavie Macquin holds HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification, reflecting a genuine commitment to reducing chemical inputs, preserving biodiversity, and managing water resources responsibly across the 15-hectare vineyard. Yields are held to a disciplined 30 hl/ha, a figure that speaks directly to the concentration and precision one finds in the glass. This is not viticulture shaped by volume.
