List of products by brand CHATEAU MAZEYRES

Set on the western and southern terraces of Pomerol, Château Mazeyres covers 25 hectares of sandy gravels and clays on the Catusseau plateau in Gironde. Acquired in 1988 and entrusted to Alain Moueix since 1992, the château completed a full conversion to biodynamic farming, achieving certification in 2018 — a rare commitment at this scale within the appellation. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the rigour of its agrobiological approach, the precision of its work across complex soils of iron-rich subsoil, sands and clays, and for the character of its reds, built on Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. A serious Pomerol for those who seek genuine terroir expression.

Château Mazeyres occupies 25 hectares on the Catusseau plateau, across the western and southern terraces of the Pomerol appellation. Farmed under certified biodynamic principles since 2018, it stands among the very few châteaux on the Right Bank to have undertaken a conversion of this depth and scale.

A Roman past, a modern vision

The site has been cultivated since at least the 2nd century AD, when it formed part of a Gallo-Roman settlement — one of the oldest viticultural locations in the Pomerol commune. The modern chapter of Château Mazeyres began in 1988, when SOGECAP — the pension fund of Société Générale — acquired the property. Alain Moueix took over management in 1992 and has since guided the château through a thorough transformation, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. His most defining decision was the complete conversion to biodynamic agriculture, a process that culminated in official certification in 2018. In an appellation where large-scale organic commitment remains the exception rather than the rule, this represents a genuine statement of intent.

Terroir: a mosaic of soils on the Catusseau plateau

The 25-hectare vineyard of Château Mazeyres sits on a varied mosaic of soils typical of the western terraces of Pomerol. Sandy gravels, clayey sands and gravel-sandy clays alternate across the plateau, underlain by a subsoil rich in crasse de fer — the iron-rich hardpan that is one of the defining geological signatures of this part of Gironde. This layering creates a complex water-retention dynamic: the sandy upper horizons drain freely, while the iron-rich subsoil retains moisture and moderates vine stress during dry summers. The western and southern exposures ensure good ripening across the estate, even in cooler vintages. The combination of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot is well suited to this diversity of soil types, each variety finding its preferred expression in different parcels.

Biodynamic viticulture: a full commitment

The conversion to biodynamics at Château Mazeyres was not a marketing exercise. Alain Moueix progressively eliminated synthetic inputs, introduced biodynamic preparations and aligned vineyard work with the lunar calendar over more than two decades before certification was sought. The result is a vineyard that is visibly alive — with greater biodiversity, improved soil structure and vines that express their terroir with increasing clarity. Certification was granted in 2018, confirming a practice that had been building quietly for years. For a Pomerol of 25 hectares, this level of commitment across the entire estate is genuinely rare.

The wines of Château Mazeyres

The château produces exclusively red wine under the Pomerol appellation, reflecting the Right Bank's historic focus on Merlot-led blends. The range includes:

  • Château Mazeyres Pomerol — the grand vin, a Merlot-dominant blend with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in oak, expressing the iron-tinged depth and plush texture characteristic of the Catusseau plateau.
  • Second wine / entry-level cuvée — offering earlier accessibility while retaining the biodynamic character of the estate.

The style across the range leans towards precision and freshness rather than weight, with the biodynamic farming lending a clarity of fruit and a fine-grained tannic structure that rewards both early drinking and medium-term cellaring.

Why we have selected Château Mazeyres

We have listed Château Mazeyres at Halles Quercamps for three reasons that matter to us as a family merchant. First, the integrity of the biodynamic commitment: this is not a recent conversion for commercial purposes, but a long-term agrobiological project built over decades by Alain Moueix. Second, the terroir: the Catusseau plateau offers a genuinely distinctive expression of Pomerol, with the iron-rich subsoil lending a mineral tension that sets these wines apart from the softer, more opulent styles found elsewhere in the appellation. Third, the value proposition: for a certified biodynamic Pomerol of this provenance, the wines remain accessible relative to the appellation's prestige tier. We recommend these wines to confirmed Bordeaux enthusiasts looking to explore the Right Bank beyond the most celebrated names, and to those who value sustainable viticulture as part of their buying criteria. At the table, the grand vin pairs beautifully with roast lamb, duck confit or a well-aged hard cheese.
