List of products by brand CHATEAU LANESSAN

Established at Cussac-Fort-Médoc on 45 hectares of deep Garonne gravel, Château Lanessan produces exclusively red wines under the Haut-Médoc appellation. Founded in 1793 by Jean Delbos and guided through eight generations by the Bouteiller family, the château passed in 2022 to Treasury Wine Estates, which has since broadened its ambitions considerably. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blends, with Merlot lending roundness and Petit Verdot adding depth — a thoroughly classical Médoc profile. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the consistency of its vintages, the clarity of its gravel terroir, and its HVE certification, all of which underpin a reliable quality-to-price ratio within the appellation. A benchmark Haut-Médoc for lovers of classical Bordeaux.

Château Lanessan spans 45 hectares of deep Garonne gravel at Cussac-Fort-Médoc, in the heart of the Haut-Médoc appellation. Founded in 1793, HVE certified, and now backed by a global wine group, it remains one of the most dependable addresses for classical Médoc red wine.

A gravel terroir at the heart of the Haut-Médoc

Cussac-Fort-Médoc sits in a privileged corridor on the left bank of the Gironde, positioned between the celebrated communes of Margaux and Saint-Julien. It is here that Château Lanessan deploys its 45 hectares across a pronounced gravel ridge — a croupe de graves — whose east-west-facing slopes ensure excellent drainage and generous sun exposure throughout the growing season. The soils are deep Garonne gravels, the same geological foundation that underpins the great classified growths of the Médoc. This terroir naturally favours late-ripening varieties, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to reach full phenolic maturity while retaining the freshness that defines the finest wines of the appellation.

Over two centuries of unbroken history

Château Lanessan was founded in 1793 by Jean Delbos, and for the next two centuries it remained within the Bouteiller family — a remarkable eight generations of continuous stewardship. That longevity speaks to a deep attachment to the land and to a consistent winemaking philosophy rooted in the classical traditions of the Haut-Médoc. In October 2022, the château was acquired by Treasury Wine Estates, the Australian group best known for the Penfolds portfolio, which has since doubled its production capacity in France. The Bouteiller family retains a stake, and the transition has been managed with care for the estate's identity.

HVE certification and responsible viticulture

Château Lanessan holds High Environmental Value (HVE) certification, the French national standard that recognises responsible practices across biodiversity, plant protection, fertilisation, and water management. For our customers, this certification offers a verifiable, independently audited assurance that the viticulture at this château goes meaningfully beyond conventional farming — without the constraints that full organic conversion would impose on a 45-hectare estate in the Médoc's sometimes challenging Atlantic climate.

The wines of Château Lanessan

The château produces exclusively red wines under the Haut-Médoc appellation, assembled from the four classic Bordeaux varieties planted across the gravel ridge:

  • Château Lanessan Haut-Médoc Rouge — the principal wine, Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant, structured and age-worthy, with the characteristic cedar and dark fruit profile of the left bank
  • Second and entry-level labels — offering earlier-drinking accessibility whilst drawing on the same gravel terroir and winemaking rigour

Cabernet Sauvignon provides the backbone and longevity; Merlot contributes mid-palate roundness; Petit Verdot adds aromatic depth and colour; Cabernet Franc brings a lifted, pencil-shaving freshness. The result is a Haut-Médoc of genuine classical character — firm in youth, rewarding with a few years in the cellar.

Why we have selected Château Lanessan

At Halles Quercamps, we look for producers whose wines deliver on their terroir year after year, without relying on fashion or inflated reputation. Château Lanessan earns its place in our range for three concrete reasons. First, the consistency of its vintages: across a long track record, this château has demonstrated the ability to produce well-structured, honest Haut-Médoc regardless of the vagaries of the Atlantic climate. Second, the legibility of its terroir: the deep gravel soils express themselves clearly in the glass, making these wines an excellent reference point for customers wishing to understand what the Médoc is truly about. Third, its HVE certification, which adds an independently verified environmental dimension to a purchase that already represents sound value within the appellation. We recommend these wines to confirmed Bordeaux enthusiasts who appreciate classical structure and cellaring potential, as well as to those building a mixed case for a special occasion. At the table, the principal red pairs superbly with rack of lamb, roast duck, or a well-aged hard cheese.
