A terroir of real distinction on the south-western slopes of Saint-Estèphe

The vineyard of Château Lafon-Rochet occupies two characteristic ridges on the south-western side of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, in the Gironde. The soils here are deep gravels and gravels over blue clay — a combination that provides both excellent drainage and a natural capacity to regulate water stress through the growing season. This duality of soil types, allied to a favourable south-westerly exposure, gives the wines their characteristic structure: firm, precise tannins underpinned by a freshness that is the hallmark of the finest Saint-Estèphe terroirs. The encépagement reflects the classic Médoc hierarchy: Cabernet Sauvignon leads, supported by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc — a blend that draws full benefit from the gravel-dominated soils.

Three centuries of history, a new chapter since 2021

The origins of Château Lafon-Rochet reach back to 1650, making it one of the older estates in the Médoc. Its modern reputation was shaped over six decades by the Tesseron family, who acquired the property in 1960 and invested steadily in both vineyard and chai. Their stewardship brought consistency and a recognisable house style — structured, age-worthy, and firmly Saint-Estèphe in character. In 2021, the château was acquired by Jacky Lorenzetti and the Vignobles Cruse-Lorenzetti, a family group with deep roots in Bordeaux. Rather than redefining the wine, the new ownership chose to deepen its integrity — most notably by accelerating the move towards organic viticulture.

Organic certification: a milestone for a Classified Growth

Organic conversion at this scale — 41 hectares within a prestigious classified growth — is no small undertaking. The Vignobles Cruse-Lorenzetti pursued this transition with notable determination, obtaining official organic certification (Agriculture Biologique) in 2024. The first fully certified vintage is that of 2024. This commitment signals a long-term vision: to express the terroir of Saint-Estèphe with greater fidelity, reducing chemical inputs and allowing the distinctive soils of the estate to speak more clearly through the wine.

The wines of Château Lafon-Rochet

The château produces exclusively red wines under the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The range is built around the grand vin and its second label:

  • Château Lafon-Rochet — the grand vin; a structured, cellar-worthy Saint-Estèphe, Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant, with the depth and grip characteristic of the appellation's finest terroirs.
  • Les Pèlerins de Lafon-Rochet — the second wine; approachable earlier, yet retaining the precision and character of the estate's gravelly soils.
