List of products by brand CHATEAU LA TOUR BLANCHE
Château la Tour Blanche holds a singular place among the great sweet wines of Bordeaux: a Premier Grand Cru Classé of the Sauternes appellation, combining over a century of viticultural excellence with a living educational mission, across 40 hectares of hillside above the Ciron at Bommes, in the Gironde.
A state-owned château rooted in the history of Sauternes
The story of Château la Tour Blanche is inseparable from the figure of Daniel Iffla, known as Osiris, a Franco-Algerian philanthropist who bequeathed the property to the French State in 1907 — on the express condition that a school of viticulture be established there. That school opened its doors in 1911 and continues to operate to this day, making this one of the most unusual estates in all of Bordeaux: a classified growth that also trains the next generation of winemakers. Since 2010, the château has been managed under the authority of the Région Nouvelle-Aquitaine, on behalf of the French Ministry of Agriculture. This institutional ownership has, far from diminishing ambition, reinforced a long-term approach to quality — free from the short-term pressures that can weigh on privately held properties.
Terroir: gravels, clay-limestone and the influence of the Ciron
The 40 hectares of vines at Château la Tour Blanche sit on the slopes of Bommes, one of the five communes entitled to the Sauternes AOC. The soils combine surface gravels — which drain freely and warm rapidly — with a clay-limestone subsoil that retains just enough moisture to sustain the vines through the summer. The proximity of the Ciron, a cool tributary of the Garonne, is central to the appellation's identity: the morning mists it generates each autumn encourage the development of Botrytis cinerea, the noble rot that concentrates sugars and builds the aromatic complexity for which Sauternes is celebrated. The estate's hillside exposure maximises this effect while ensuring good air circulation and healthy fruit.
Organic farming and restrained yields
Château la Tour Blanche is certified in organic agriculture and holds the HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification — a commitment that reflects both the estate's pedagogical mission and a genuine conviction about the long-term health of its soils. Yields are deliberately contained at 12 to 15 hl/ha, well below the appellation average, concentrating the must and ensuring that only the finest botrytised berries make it into the final blend. The grape varieties grown are the classic trio of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, each contributing its own register — richness and texture from the Sémillon, freshness and aromatic lift from the Sauvignon Blanc, and a floral, musky note from the Muscadelle.
The wines of Château la Tour Blanche
- Château la Tour Blanche — Premier Grand Cru Classé Sauternes: the grand vin of the estate; a rich, botrytised white of great depth and ageing potential, built on Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc and a touch of Muscadelle.
- Les Charmilles de Tour Blanche — Sauternes: the second wine of the château; approachable earlier, it shares the same organic farming philosophy and the same terroir character as the grand vin.
Why we have selected Château la Tour Blanche
We have listed Château la Tour Blanche at Halles Quercamps for several reasons that go well beyond its classification. First, the rigour of its organic viticulture: at yields of 12 to 15 hl/ha, the estate makes no concession to volume, and the HVE certification reflects a genuine commitment to sustainable farming rather than a marketing exercise. Second, the historical depth of the property — the viticultural school, the bequest of Osiris, the century-long continuity of purpose — gives these wines a context and a story that we find compelling to share with our customers. Third, and most importantly, the wines themselves: precise, complex, and built to age.
We recommend these Sauternes to enthusiasts building a cellar of great French sweet wines, as well as to those seeking a considered gift for a special occasion. At table, they are magnificent alongside Roquefort or a ripe, washed-rind cheese; equally, they reward patience served alongside pan-fried foie gras or a simple tarte Tatin.
