Three centuries of history in the Médoc

The estate was founded at the turn of the seventeenth century by the de la Salle family, who established its early reputation within the Médoc. In 1760, Irish merchant Mark Kirwan acquired the property and lent it his name — a name it has carried ever since. The château was duly recognised in the landmark 1855 Classification, earning its place as a 3rd Grand Cru Classé, a distinction it retains to this day.

In 1925, the Schÿler family — through the négociant house of Schröder & Schÿler — took ownership of Château Kirwan, beginning a stewardship that has now spanned a full century. Their long tenure has brought both stability and a sustained investment in quality, consolidating the château's standing within the appellation of Margaux.

Terroir: Pyrenean gravel at Cantenac

The vineyard sits on the commune of Cantenac in the Gironde, on a west-facing slope oriented east, lying between 12 and 15 metres in altitude. The soils are composed of graves pyrénéennes — deep Pyrenean gravel — resting on a clay subsoil. This combination ensures excellent drainage while retaining sufficient moisture during dry summers, a balance that is central to the finesse characteristic of Margaux reds.

The 37-hectare vineyard is planted with the four classic Médoc varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Each brings its own contribution to the blend — structure and longevity from the Cabernet Sauvignon, suppleness and roundness from the Merlot, aromatic complexity from the Cabernet Franc, and depth of colour and spice from the Petit Verdot.

HVE certification and responsible viticulture

Château Kirwan holds HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale — High Environmental Value), France's most rigorous national agri-environmental standard.
