List of products by brand CHATEAU HAUTE-FONROUSSE

Set across 33 hectares of clay-limestone hillsides above the Dordogne valley, at Monbazillac and Pomport, Château Haute-Fonrousse produces white, red and rosé wines under the Bordeaux appellation. The Géraud family has been rooted in this vineyard since 1870; in 1962, Gaston Géraud purchased the château from a Belgian family, laying the foundations for an estate that Stéphane Géraud now runs with quiet rigour across plateaux, valleys and hillsides planted with Sémillon, Sauvignon, Muscadelle and Merlot. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the consistency of its cuvées, the honest expression of its Périgord terroir, and the sound relationship between careful work and accessible pricing. A Bordeaux of real character, firmly rooted in the Dordogne.

Château Haute-Fonrousse represents a long-standing tradition of family viticulture, anchored since 1870 on the hillsides of Monbazillac and Pomport in the Dordogne. Across 33 hectares of clay-limestone soils, the Géraud family crafts white, red and rosé wines under the Bordeaux appellation with a consistency that commands genuine respect.

A family estate rooted since 1870

The story of Château Haute-Fonrousse is inseparable from that of the Géraud family in the Bergerac-Monbazillac vineyard. Their presence here dates to 1870, making this one of the longer-established family connections in the Dordogne. In 1962, Gaston Géraud — Stéphane's grandfather — acquired the château from a Belgian family, a decisive moment that placed the estate firmly in French family hands and set it on its current course. That continuity of ownership across generations is not merely a point of heritage: it translates directly into a deep knowledge of the land, its rhythms and its particular demands.

Terroir: clay-limestone slopes above the Dordogne

The 33 hectares of Château Haute-Fonrousse spread across the varied relief of Monbazillac and Pomport — plateaux, gentle valleys and hillsides — all within the clay-limestone geology that characterises this part of the Dordogne. The hillside exposures, overlooking the Dordogne valley, provide the drainage and the moderating influence that allow the estate's grape varieties to ripen with balance rather than excess. Sémillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle form the white-wine backbone, a classic South-West trio well suited to these soils, while Merlot anchors the red and rosé production. The diversity of the terrain — from flatter plateau parcels to steeper valley slopes — gives Stéphane Géraud a range of raw materials to work with, and the estate's wines reflect that variety of expression within a coherent house style.

Winemaking: rigour and straightforwardness

Under Stéphane Géraud's direction, the approach at the château is one of careful, attentive work in both vineyard and cellar. The emphasis is on expressing the Périgord terroir honestly — wines that are frank in character, well-made, and priced to be opened rather than stored indefinitely in a collector's cellar. The full range — Bordeaux blanc, rouge and rosé — is produced here, each reflecting the estate's commitment to quality without ostentation.

The wine range at Château Haute-Fonrousse

  • Bordeaux Blanc — Sémillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle; fresh, aromatic, with the characteristic roundness of clay-limestone whites from the Dordogne.
  • Bordeaux Rouge — Merlot-led; approachable in structure, with the fruit-forward character suited to the appellation and the terroir.
  • Bordeaux Rosé — Pale, dry and food-friendly; a straightforward expression of the estate's Merlot on these hillside soils.

Why we have selected Château Haute-Fonrousse

At Halles Quercamps, we look for producers whose wines reflect where they come from and who stand behind their work over the long term. Château Haute-Fonrousse meets both criteria. The Géraud family's unbroken presence in this vineyard since 1870 — and Stéphane's continuation of that commitment today — gives us confidence in the estate's direction. We also value the range's consistency: these are wines that perform reliably across vintages, without the variability that can affect smaller or less experienced operations. The honest relationship between quality of work and price is a further reason we list this château: our customers can open a bottle without ceremony and find something genuinely satisfying. We particularly recommend the white and rosé to those who enjoy well-made, terroir-driven Bordeaux for the table — excellent alongside fish from the Dordogne river, grilled poultry, or a simple charcuterie board.
