A gravel terroir patiently rebuilt

The story of Château Haut-Gravat begins in 1960, when the estate was reconstituted on this distinctive gravel outcrop. The soils here — well-draining, mineral, of Garonne origin — set this corner of the Médoc hinterland apart from the broader Bordeaux landscape. Gravel soils warm quickly, encourage deep root development, and impart a characteristic finesse and structure to the wines grown on them. This is not borrowed prestige; it is a genuine expression of place.

The Lanneau family: four decades of quiet dedication

In 1983, Nadine and Alain Lanneau took over the château, bringing the focus and continuity that a small family property demands. Under the Société Alain Lanneau, the estate has been run with the kind of unhurried rigour that suits its scale. At 10 hectares, Château Haut-Gravat is never going to be a volume producer, and that is precisely the point. The Lanneau family have concentrated their efforts on consistency of style and honest expression of the Bordeaux appellation — values that earned the château its Cru Artisan classification in 2011, a designation reserved for small, owner-managed properties that meet strict quality and independence criteria.

HVE certification and a responsible approach to the vineyard

In 2020, Château Haut-Gravat obtained Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification, the French government's highest environmental standard for agricultural holdings. This recognises measurable commitments across biodiversity, plant protection, fertilisation, and water management. For a small family château in the Gironde, achieving HVE is a meaningful step — not a marketing exercise, but a verifiable undertaking. The three grape varieties cultivated — Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot — are the classic Bordeaux triumvirate, here grown on gravel soils that encourage natural drainage and moderate vigour.

The wines of Château Haut-Gravat

The château produces two styles of wine under the Bordeaux appellation:

Bordeaux Rouge — a structured red blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, with the mineral backbone typical of gravel-grown fruit. The 2022 vintage was awarded a silver medal at the Concours International de Lyon 2025, an independent confirmation of the château's current form.
