A château rooted in the history of Bordeaux

The medieval fortress dates to the fourteenth century and is listed as a Monument Historique — one of the most striking landmarks in the Bordeaux wine country. The de Bethmann family took ownership in 1886, bringing long-term vision that defines the château's modern identity. Alexandre de Bethmann now leads the estate. Nearly 140 years of unbroken family stewardship have shaped a coherent, patient approach to viticulture that few classified châteaux in Bordeaux can match.

Terroir: Günzian gravel, clay-limestone, and sand

The 60 hectares sit across croupes de graves — the rounded gravel mounds defining the finest terroirs of Pessac-Léognan. Günzian gravel accounts for roughly 50% of the vineyard, providing drainage and heat retention suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Clay-limestone (35%) lends structure and mineral tension; sand (15%) contributes suppleness and early aromatic expression. This mosaic allows the estate to plant Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot for the reds, and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle for the whites, each where the terroir suits it best.

Organic certification and responsible viticulture

Château Olivier holds both Agriculture Biologique certification and Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) accreditation. The château produces two colours under the Pessac-Léognan appellation, both carrying Grand Cru Classé de Graves status — shared by only six estates in the appellation:

  • Château Olivier Rouge (Pessac-Léognan) — A Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend with Merlot and Petit Verdot, shaped by Günzian gravel. Structured and age-worthy, with the characteristic graphite and dark fruit profile of the appellation's finest reds.
  • Château Olivier Blanc (Pessac-Léognan) — A Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon blend of notable precision, combining citrus and floral lift with weight and texture. Among the most compelling dry white Bordeaux in the classified tier.
