A vineyard rooted in the Saint-Émilion plain
Located on the flat southern plain of the commune of Saint-Émilion in the Gironde, Château de Fonbel extends across 16 hectares of varied soils — clay-sand, gravelly and sandy — that distinguish it from the celebrated limestone slopes of the appellation's inner core. This is terroir of a different character: generous, well-drained, suited to a broad palette of varieties. The flat aspect of the site encourages even ripening across the vineyard, and the diversity of soil types within the property allows the team to work with a notably wide range of grape varieties.
The Vauthier family and the Ausone connection
The Vauthier family has owned Château de Fonbel since 1971, and it is impossible to understand this château without reference to that relationship. The Vauthiers are also the proprietors of Château Ausone, one of Saint-Émilion's two Premier Grand Cru Classé A estates, and Fonbel has long served as the experimental vineyard — the working laboratory — for Ausone. Viticultural trials, variety assessments, new approaches to canopy management: ideas tested at Fonbel can, in time, inform decisions made at the very top of the Bordeaux hierarchy. Today, Pauline Vauthier oversees the management of Château de Fonbel, bringing to it the same exacting standards that define the family's approach across all their properties. Organic conversion and the grape varieties
Château de Fonbel is currently engaged in organic conversion, reflecting a broader commitment within the Vauthier family to more sustainable viticulture. The encépagement is unusually diverse for Saint-Émilion: Merlot leads, as one would expect in this appellation, but is joined by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Petit Verdot. The presence of Carmenère — a variety that largely disappeared from Bordeaux following the phylloxera crisis — is particularly noteworthy and speaks directly to the château's role as a viticultural testing ground.
