List of products by brand CHATEAU D'ARCHE

Perched at 70 metres on the highest point of the Sauternes commune in the Gironde, Château d'Arche covers 55 hectares of graves and argilo-calcaire soils — a 2nd Grand Cru Classé since 1855. Founded in 1611 and taken over in 2005 by Philippe Boel, the château has undergone a thoroughgoing transformation: a 2,300 m² eco-responsible winery opened in 2019, HVE certification, organic conversion in progress, and deliberately restrained yields of just 10 hl/ha. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the rigour of its viticulture, the precision of its botrytised wines from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle, and its genuine environmental commitment. A reference Sauternes, rooted in four centuries of history and firmly facing the future.

At the summit of the Sauternes hillsides, 70 metres above the Gironde plain, Château d'Arche has been producing wine since 1611 — making it one of the oldest estates in the appellation. Classified as a 2nd Grand Cru in the historic 1855 classification and revitalised since 2005 under Philippe Boel, this 55-hectare château stands today as one of Sauternes' most compelling addresses for lovers of great sweet wine.

Four centuries of history on the heights of Sauternes

Founded in 1611, Château d'Arche predates the famous 1855 classification by nearly two and a half centuries. Its elevation to 2nd Grand Cru Classé in that landmark Bordeaux ranking confirmed what the estate's position had always suggested: that this hilltop site, commanding the highest point in the commune of Sauternes at 70 metres altitude, was capable of producing wines of genuine distinction. When Philippe Boel and a group of investors acquired the château in 2005, they inherited both a prestigious name and a property in need of renewal. The subsequent investment has been substantial and purposeful. In 2019, a new 2,300 m² winery — built to the highest environmental standards at a cost of five million euros — was inaugurated on the estate, signalling a clear commitment to quality and sustainability in equal measure.

A terroir shaped by altitude, gravel, and morning mist

The soils at Château d'Arche are predominantly graves (80%), with the remainder composed of argilo-calcaire and limons. This combination of free-draining gravel and clay-limestone provides both the warmth and the water retention that Sémillon demands to ripen fully and develop the noble rot — botrytis cinerea — that defines great Sauternes. The south-facing slopes and elevated position encourage the early-morning mists that rise from the Ciron river, a prerequisite for botrytis development, while the afternoon sun dries the bunches and concentrates the sugars. Yields are kept to a strict 10 hl/ha — a fraction of what is permitted in most appellations — ensuring that each bottle carries the full weight of the terroir's potential.

Responsible viticulture: HVE, organic conversion, and ISO 14001

Château d'Arche holds HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification and is currently engaged in full organic conversion, alongside ISO 14001 environmental management certification — a combination that places it among the more rigorous estates in the Sauternes appellation. The new winery, with its gravity-fed design and energy-efficient infrastructure, is the physical expression of this commitment. These are not marketing credentials; they reflect a genuine shift in how the estate approaches its land and its wines.

The wine range at Château d'Arche

The estate produces wines across several colours and styles, with the Sauternes blanc liquoreux at the heart of its identity. The range includes:

  • Sauternes blanc (liquoreux) — the flagship: botrytised Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle, with the concentration and élevage befitting a 2nd Grand Cru Classé
  • Rouge — a Bordeaux red produced from the estate's plantings outside the Sauternes AOC zone
  • Rosé — a lighter, fresh expression for earlier drinking
  • Effervescent — a sparkling wine completing the estate's offer across styles and occasions

The grape varieties across the range are Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle — the classic Sauternes triumvirate, with Sémillon providing the structural backbone for long ageing.

Why we have selected Château d'Arche

We have listed Château d'Arche because it represents something increasingly rare in Bordeaux: a classified growth that has genuinely reinvented itself without abandoning what made it worth classifying in the first place. The combination of a 2nd Grand Cru Classé 1855 pedigree, yields of just 10 hl/ha, and a credible environmental programme — HVE, organic conversion, ISO 14001 — gives us confidence that the wines in our selection are made with both ambition and integrity. This is a château we recommend to confirmed amateurs of Sauternes who are looking to cellar wines with genuine ageing potential, as well as to those seeking a considered gift for a serious wine lover. At the table, the great Sauternes blanc is a natural companion to Roquefort or a ripe foie gras, but do not overlook it alongside a finely spiced dish or a rich crème brûlée.
