List of products by brand CHATEAU DALEM

Château Dalem spans 40 hectares on the clay-limestone coteaux of Saillans, in the Gironde, within the Fronsac appellation. Founded in 1610, the vineyard remained in the same family for three centuries before Michel Rullier acquired it in 1955. His daughter Brigitte Rullier-Loussert — named Winemaker of the Year by the Guide Hachette 2019 — has since transformed the estate, expanding it from 15 to 40 hectares. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the consistency of its Fronsac reds, the honest expression of its terroir, and the rigorous vision Brigitte brings to every vintage. A Fronsac address that deserves the full attention of lovers of characterful Bordeaux.

Château Dalem stands among the most serious addresses on Bordeaux's right bank, with 40 hectares of vines on the clay-limestone slopes of Saillans, at the heart of the Fronsac appellation. Under the direction of Brigitte Rullier-Loussert, named Winemaker of the Year by the Guide Hachette 2019, this historic château continues to set the benchmark for the appellation.

A vineyard rooted in the history of Fronsac

The origins of Château Dalem reach back to 1610, when the first vines were planted on these south-south-east facing slopes above Saillans. For three centuries the property remained within the same family — a rare continuity that speaks to the quality of the site. In 1955, Michel Rullier acquired the château and set about restoring its reputation. His daughter Brigitte Rullier-Loussert took over the reins in 2002, bringing fresh ambition and a clear-eyed approach to both viticulture and winemaking. Under her stewardship the estate has grown substantially, from 15 to 40 hectares, without any compromise on the standards that earned her national recognition.

Terroir: clay-limestone coteaux and the Fronsadais molasse

The vineyards of Château Dalem occupy the coteaux and faux plateaux of Saillans, where the soils are predominantly clay-limestone overlying a subsoil of Fronsadais molasse — a sedimentary bedrock that is particular to this corner of the Gironde and that lends the wines their characteristic structure and freshness. The south-south-east exposure ensures excellent ripening of both Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the two varieties that make up the château's plantings. This combination of aspect, soil depth and subsoil drainage is precisely what distinguishes Fronsac from its more celebrated neighbours across the Dordogne, and it is a combination that Brigitte Rullier-Loussert understands and works with considerable skill.

Winemaking: precision in the cellar

The winemaking at Château Dalem reflects the same rigour that characterises the work in the vineyard. The château produces exclusively red wines under the Fronsac appellation, with an élevage designed to honour the natural structure of the terroir rather than to mask it. The result is a style that is firmly Bordelais in its architecture — structured tannins, genuine depth — yet with the particular mineral freshness that the Fronsac coteaux reliably deliver.

The wines of Château Dalem

The range focuses on the Fronsac appellation and is built around the estate's two principal varieties:

  • Fronsac rouge — the château's principal wine, blending Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the clay-limestone coteaux of Saillans; structured, mineral, and built for the cellar.

Why we have selected Château Dalem

Fronsac remains one of the most consistently undervalued appellations in Bordeaux, and Château Dalem is, in our view, one of its most dependable addresses. We selected this château for three reasons. First, the consistency of the vintage work: Brigitte Rullier-Loussert's recognition by the Guide Hachette in 2019 was not a one-off — it reflects a sustained commitment to quality across successive harvests. Second, the integrity of the terroir expression: the clay-limestone soils and the Fronsadais molasse subsoil give these reds a mineral backbone and a freshness that set them apart from many right-bank wines. Third, the compelling value that Fronsac continues to offer relative to Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. We recommend Château Dalem to lovers of classic, structured Bordeaux who want depth and genuine character without paying grand cru prices. At the table, these reds are well suited to roast lamb, duck confit, or a well-aged hard cheese.
