List of products by brand CHATEAU CLINET

On the high plateau of Pomerol, Château Clinet works 11 hectares of deep clay and Günzian gravels at the heart of one of Bordeaux's most sought-after appellations. With vines recorded as far back as 1595, this is among the oldest properties in Pomerol; since Jean-Louis Laborde acquired it in 1999, and with Ronan Laborde at the helm from 2003, the estate has been steered with quiet rigour — earning HVE certification in 2021. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the precision of its terroir — iron-rich crasse de fer, clay, and sand — and for a style that expresses Pomerol with honesty and without artifice. A Bordeaux reference we are genuinely proud to list.

Château Clinet holds a commanding position on the high plateau of Pomerol, the right-bank Bordeaux appellation whose 800 hectares produce exclusively red wines among the most sought-after in the Gironde. With 11 hectares of contiguous vineyard, this château combines one of the oldest recorded histories in the appellation with a terroir of rare precision.

A vineyard recorded since 1595

The archives first mention the vineyard of Château Clinet in 1595, placing it among the oldest documented properties in Pomerol. For four centuries, these vines have occupied the same privileged ground on the plateau, a continuity that speaks to the enduring quality of the site itself. In 1999, Jean-Louis Laborde acquired the château, bringing fresh ambition and a clear-eyed approach to viticulture. His son Ronan took over the day-to-day direction in 2003 and has since pursued a programme of steady, thoughtful improvement — refining the vineyard management, tightening the selection, and in 2022 acquiring the neighbouring Château Lécuyer to extend the estate's holdings. The Laborde family's stewardship has given Château Clinet a new chapter without severing its deep roots in Pomerol's history.

Terroir: clay, gravel, and iron

The 11-hectare vineyard sits on the high plateau of Pomerol, where the soils are a complex layering of Günzian gravels, deep clay, sand, and the iron-oxide deposits known locally as crasse de fer. This iron-rich subsoil is a hallmark of the finest sites in the appellation, contributing structure and a distinctive mineral tension to the wines. The deep clay retains moisture through dry summers, while the gravels provide drainage and warmth. The principal grape variety is Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc — a blend well suited to this terroir and to the full, structured style for which the château is known.

HVE certification and winemaking approach

In 2021, Château Clinet obtained High Environmental Value (HVE) certification, a recognition of the Laborde family's commitment to responsible viticulture across the estate. The approach in the winery follows the same logic of precision: careful sorting, measured extraction, and an élevage calibrated to the character of each vintage rather than to a fixed formula. The result is a wine that reflects its Bordeaux origins with clarity and without excess.

The wines of Château Clinet

The château produces exclusively red wines under the Pomerol appellation, as is the rule across this small but prestigious corner of the Gironde.

  • Château Clinet Pomerol — the grand vin: deep, structured, built on Merlot with the iron-inflected character of the high plateau; a wine for the cellar as much as the table.
  • Second and other selections — where applicable, the château produces additional cuvées drawing on younger vines or specific parcels, offering earlier accessibility while maintaining the estate's hallmark precision.

Why we have selected Château Clinet

We have listed Château Clinet at Halles Quercamps for three reasons that matter to us as merchants. First, the terroir is genuinely distinguished: the combination of crasse de fer, deep clay, and Günzian gravels on the high plateau of Pomerol is not replicated elsewhere, and it shows in the glass. Second, the Laborde family's direction since 1999 — and Ronan's since 2003 — has been consistent and transparent, with the HVE certification in 2021 as a concrete marker of their environmental commitment. Third, the style is honest: these are wines that express their appellation without cosmetic treatment or inflated ambition. We recommend Château Clinet to confirmed Bordeaux enthusiasts who appreciate right-bank structure and the particular depth that Pomerol's iron-rich soils can produce. At the table, the grand vin pairs beautifully with roast lamb, duck confit, or a well-aged hard cheese.
