The property had passed through successive identities — Château Haut-Plantey, then La Bouygue — before Jacques Thienpont, already celebrated as the custodian of Le Pin in Pomerol, recognised its potential and acquired it. The name chosen for the reborn château is quietly eloquent: l'if is the French word for yew, and a venerable yew tree stands on the property itself. The echo of Le Pin — the pine — is deliberate, a discreet family signature linking the two banks of Bordeaux.
Terroir: the eastern plateau of Saint-Émilion
The 8 hectares of Château l'If sit on the eastern plateau of Saint-Émilion, in the Gironde, on soils that are predominantly argilo-calcaire — clay over limestone. This geology is well suited to both Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the two varieties that form the backbone of the château's red wines.
