The essence of Saint-Émilion in your glass

  • This 2021 vintage displays considerable finesse and elegant structure, the result of a harmonious blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, two varieties that complement one another on the Right Bank.
  • The aromatic palette is notably rich: ripe red fruits, floral notes and a discreet spice character reflect the distinctive terroir of Saint-Émilion, where clay and limestone soils shape the wine's character.
  • Château L'If reveals genuine complexity, with a sustained finish and silky tannins that suggest the wine will develop gracefully over the next five to eight years in a cool cellar.

In the mouth
Velvety texture with good acidity that provides freshness and balance. The mid-palate is well-defined, leading to a clean, persistent finish with no harsh edges.
On the nose
Aromas of black cherry and blackcurrant are complemented by notes of cedarwood and liquorice, with a subtle mineral undertone characteristic of the appellation.
On the eye
Deep, intense garnet with promising purple reflections; good concentration and clarity.
M. Francois
I find Château L'If 2021 to be a well-made Saint-Émilion that strikes an honest balance between aromatic richness and fine-grained tannin structure. It is neither over-extracted nor austere—a wine that will reward patience but is also approachable now with a modest decant. A sound choice for the discerning table.

CHÂTEAU L'IF

Established across 8 hectares of argilo-calcaire soils on the eastern plateau of Saint-Émilion, Château l'If produces exclusively red wines under the Saint-Émilion appellation. Acquired in 2010 by Jacques Thienpont — owner of the celebrated Le Pin in Pomerol — and Fiona Morrison, this château, formerly known as Haut-Plantey and later La Bouygue, takes its name from the ancient yew tree standing on the property: a quiet nod to Le Pin across the river. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the rigour of its viticulture, the coherence of its vision since 2010, and the unmistakable Thienpont signature it brings to Saint-Émilion. A red Bordeaux of genuine character, available in our curated selection.
