Seven centuries of history in Pauillac

The origins of Château Latour reach back to 1331, making it one of the oldest wine estates in the Médoc. Situated in the commune of Pauillac in the Gironde, the château was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the landmark 1855 Classification — a status it has never relinquished. In 1993, François Pinault acquired the property for approximately 110 million euros through his groupe Artémis, ushering in a period of sustained investment and a clear long-term vision: to express the full potential of this extraordinary terroir without compromise.

A terroir of rare complexity

The estate extends across 90 hectares in total, with its most prized parcel being the Enclos — a 47-hectare block of deep argillaceous gravels (graves argileuses) sitting on an argilo-calcaire subsoil, its gentle ridges (croupes) oriented towards the south-east and dominating the Gironde estuary. The surrounding parcels rest on sandier, gravelly soils (sables graveleux), lending a complementary freshness to the blends. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc — the classic Pauillac palette, here given full expression by soils that drain impeccably and retain warmth through the growing season.

A pioneer of organic viticulture in Bordeaux

In 2015, Château Latour became the first Premier Grand Cru Classé in Bordeaux to receive full organic certification (Agriculture Biologique). The Enclos is now farmed entirely in biodynamics, a discipline that goes beyond the elimination of synthetic inputs to work with the rhythms of the soil and the vine. This conversion was not a marketing gesture: it was the result of years of quiet, methodical work in the vineyard, driven by the conviction that the finest expression of Pauillac can only come from living soils. The winemaking follows the same philosophy — patient, non-interventionist, focused on preserving the integrity of each vintage.

What drew us to Château Latour — and keeps it firmly in our selection — is the coherence of the entire project: a terroir of genuine distinction in Pauillac, a biodynamic approach that is both rigorous and sincere, and wines that reward patience in the cellar. The 2015 organic certification was, for us, a confirmation of what the wines had long suggested: a team willing to work harder for a truer result. We recommend these wines to confirmed amateurs of great red Bordeaux who buy with a horizon of ten years or more, and to those building a cellar around the great appellations of the Médoc.
