List of products by brand DOMAINE PEYRE ROSE

Domaine Peyre Rose cultivates 25 hectares of clay-limestone garrigue hillsides in Saint-Pargoire, Hérault, under certified organic farming and with yields held firmly below 20 hl/ha. Marlène Soria — a former estate agent who cleared scrubland by hand from the early 1980s before producing her first vintage in 1988 — has become one of the most singular figures in Languedoc-Roussillon, named 'Homme de l'année' by the Revue du Vin de France in 1994 and widely celebrated as the 'Diva of Syrah'. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this estate for the absolute coherence between an uncompromising terroir, some of the lowest yields in the region, and a vision sustained by one woman for over three decades. For those seeking the true soul of southern Syrah.

Domaine Peyre Rose stands apart in the Languedoc: built not on inherited vines but on sheer conviction, carved out of the garrigue at Saint-Pargoire in the Hérault by a woman who had never made wine before — and who went on to redefine what the appellation could achieve.

A domain born of determination, not tradition

Nothing in Marlène Soria's background pointed towards viticulture. A former estate agent, she began clearing scrubland on the plateau above Saint-Pargoire in the early 1980s, working the land before a single vine had been planted. The first harvest came in 1988, and from that point Domaine Peyre Rose began its quiet, uncompromising ascent. In 1994, the Revue du Vin de France named her 'Homme de l'année' — a pointed acknowledgement of a talent that had already unsettled the established order of southern French wine. The sobriquet 'Diva of Syrah' followed, and it has stuck, not as flattery but as a precise description of her relationship with the grape.

Terroir: clay-limestone heights above the garrigue

The estate's 25 hectares sit on stony clay-limestone hillsides and plateau slopes, a terrain that imposes discipline on the vine and rewards patience from the grower. Exposure to the plateau heights brings significant diurnal temperature variation, preserving aromatic freshness in varieties — Syrah, Grenache noir, Mourvèdre for the reds; Rolle, Roussanne and Viognier for the whites — that might otherwise tip into heaviness in the Languedoc heat. Yields are held to under 20 hl/ha, a figure that places Domaine Peyre Rose among the most rigorous producers in the entire Languedoc-Roussillon region, and one that is not a marketing figure but a direct consequence of how the vines are tended.

Organic farming as a non-negotiable foundation

The estate is certified under agriculture biologique, a commitment that aligns naturally with the philosophy of minimal intervention that runs through every decision at Domaine Peyre Rose. No systemic treatments, no shortcuts in the vineyard: the garrigue surroundings, the stony soils and the low-yielding vines are managed as an integrated whole. The élevage reflects the same patience — wines are aged for extended periods before release, a choice that demands confidence in the cellar and trust from the merchant who lists them.

The wines: red and white Languedoc of rare concentration

  • Red Languedoc — Syrah-led blends, occasionally with Grenache noir and Mourvèdre, from vines producing under 20 hl/ha: structured, deep, built for the cellar.
  • White Languedoc — Rolle, Roussanne and Viognier on clay-limestone soils: textured, aromatic, with the grip that comes from genuinely low yields.

Releases are infrequent by design. Marlène Soria does not rush her wines to market, and the range at any given time reflects what the estate judges ready — not what the calendar demands.

Why we have selected Domaine Peyre Rose

We list Domaine Peyre Rose because it represents something increasingly rare: a producer in the Languedoc appellation who has never adjusted her standards to suit commercial convenience. The sub-20 hl/ha yields are verifiable and consistent; the organic certification is long-standing; the reputation, built over more than thirty years without the support of a famous appellation name or a classified-growth pedigree, is entirely self-made. We recommend these wines to confirmed amateurs of southern French reds who are prepared to cellar patiently and who want to understand what Syrah can achieve outside the northern Rhône. At the table, expect them to hold their own alongside slow-roasted lamb, aged hard cheeses, or a well-hung game bird.
