A château rooted in the history of Saint-Émilion

The origins of Château Lassègue reach back to 1738, making it one of the older properties in the appellation. For much of its history it was held by the Freylon family, who maintained the estate through successive generations. In 2003, Californian wine producer Jess Jackson — founder of Jackson Family Wines and patriarch of the Banke-Jackson family — acquired the château, bringing with it a fresh sense of ambition and the resources to pursue a thoroughgoing programme of improvement. The choice of Pierre and Nicolas Seillan to lead the estate was deliberate: father and son, both deeply versed in the traditions of Bordeaux, they have applied their micro-cru philosophy here with notable consistency. Rather than vinifying the estate as a single entity, they treat each parcel as an individual expression, assembling the final wines only once each plot has been understood on its own terms.

Terroir: clay-limestone slopes with southern exposure

The 36 hectares of Château Lassègue lie on the hillsides of Saint-Hippolyte, a commune on the eastern edge of the Saint-Émilion appellation in the Gironde. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone — argilo-calcaire — with the balance between clay and limestone varying from parcel to parcel. This variation is precisely what makes the micro-cru approach so well suited to the property: the Seillans can exploit subtle differences in drainage, water retention, and mineral character across the estate. The slopes face south and south-west, ensuring generous sunshine and good natural ripening of the three grape varieties planted: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
