List of products by brand CHATEAU FILHOT

Château Filhot covers 62 hectares in Sauternes (Gironde), classified 2nd Grand Cru in 1855, on soils of gravel, clay and sand across south and south-westerly facing slopes. Founded in 1709 by Romain de Filhot, the château has been guided since 1974 by the de Vaucelles family, descendants of the Lur-Saluces line. Built around 60% Sémillon, their sweet whites express a measured richness sustained by deliberately restrained yields of 15 to 18 hl/ha. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the consistency of its vintages, the precision of its élevage, and the historical standing of one of Sauternes' great names — now HVE level 3 certified. A benchmark Sauternes for the discerning cellar.

Château Filhot stands among the most authoritative names in Sauternes: a 2nd Grand Cru Classé of 1855, 62 hectares farmed with quiet rigour by the de Vaucelles family, and a history stretching back to 1709. We list it with genuine conviction.

Three centuries of history in Sauternes

It was in 1709 that Romain de Filhot established what would become one of the most recognised châteaux in the Sauternes appellation. When the great Bordeaux classification of 1855 was drawn up, Château Filhot was confirmed as a 2nd Grand Cru Classé — a distinction it has held ever since. In 1974, the de Vaucelles family, direct descendants of the illustrious Lur-Saluces dynasty, took stewardship of the estate, bringing with them a deep sense of continuity and responsibility towards this exceptional terroir. Today, comte Gabriel de Vaucelles oversees the château with the same long-term vision that has defined its reputation across generations.

Terroir: gravel, clay and limestone on south-facing slopes

The 62 hectares of Château Filhot sit on a gently undulating plateau in the commune of Sauternes, in the Gironde. The soils combine gravel, clay and sand over a limestone base — a composition that drains well while retaining just enough moisture to support the slow, complex ripening that Sauternes demands. The slopes are oriented predominantly south and south-west, maximising sun exposure across the growing season and encouraging the development of botrytis cinerea, the noble rot essential to the production of great Sauternes. Yields are kept deliberately low, between 15 and 18 hl/ha, concentrating the must and preserving the natural tension that distinguishes a serious Sauternes from a merely sweet one.

Viticulture and certification

Château Filhot holds HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) level 3 certification, the highest tier of France's national agri-environmental scheme. This reflects a sustained commitment to reducing chemical inputs, preserving biodiversity across the estate, and managing water resources responsibly — without compromising the quality of fruit that a classified Sauternes demands. The vineyard is planted to Sémillon (60%), the backbone of the blend, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc (36%) for freshness and aromatic lift, and a small proportion of Muscadelle (4%) for floral complexity.

The wines of Château Filhot

The château produces exclusively white wines within the Sauternes AOC. The range is built around the estate's grand vin, a botrytised sweet white of real depth and precision:

  • Château Filhot Sauternes — the grand vin: rich, honeyed and structured, with Sémillon at its core lending weight and ageing potential, Sauvignon Blanc bringing citrus and freshness, and Muscadelle adding a delicate floral note. A Sauternes that rewards patience in the cellar.
  • Second wine / négociant selections — where available, we may also list younger or more accessible expressions from the château, offering an introduction to the Filhot style at an earlier stage of development.

Why we have selected Château Filhot

At Halles Quercamps, we have followed Château Filhot across numerous vintages, and what strikes us consistently is the precision of the élevage and the château's refusal to over-extract. These are Sauternes wines with genuine backbone — not simply sweet, but structured and age-worthy. The combination of a classified 1855 pedigree, HVE level 3 certification, and yields held firmly between 15 and 18 hl/ha gives us every confidence in the integrity of what is in the bottle. We recommend Château Filhot to customers building a serious cellar, to those seeking a considered gift for a wine-loving friend, and to anyone who wishes to explore Sauternes beyond the obvious names. At the table, these wines are magnificent alongside foie gras, a ripe Roquefort, or a classic tarte Tatin.
