Over five centuries of history at Léognan

Few châteaux in Bordeaux can trace their origins as far back as Château Haut-Bailly. The estate was founded in 1461, placing it among the oldest continuously cultivated vineyards in the Graves region. Over the centuries it passed through various hands before arriving, in 1998, with the American banker Robert G. Wilmers, whose family has owned it since. What makes this transition particularly notable is what did not change: Véronique Sanders, granddaughter of former owner Daniel Sanders, remained at the helm as managing director, preserving the institutional memory and stylistic continuity that define the château's identity. This combination of fresh investment and deep-rooted expertise has proved remarkably fruitful.

A terroir of graves, sand and fossilised sea

The 30 hectares of Pessac-Léognan vines at Château Haut-Bailly occupy the gentle east-facing slopes of Léognan, with individual parcels reaching up to 20 metres of elevation change — significant by the standards of this otherwise flat region. The soils are a layered composition: graves and sand at the surface, giving excellent drainage and warmth retention, over a subsoil of faluns — fossilised marine sediments that lend a mineral tension to the wines rarely found elsewhere in the appellation. Clay is also present, providing a degree of water retention that sustains the vines through drier summers. The encépagement is unusually broad for a Bordeaux rouge: Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, supported by Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and the rarer Carménère and Malbec — historic Bordeaux varieties that add complexity and a certain archival character to the blend.

Château Haut-Bailly holds HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification, reflecting a genuine commitment to reducing chemical inputs, preserving biodiversity and managing the vineyard with long-term ecological responsibility.
