A history rooted in Saint-Julien since 1720

The origins of Château Ducru Beaucaillou reach back to 1720, making it one of the oldest continuously operating estates in the Médoc. The château took its modern identity in 1795, when Bertrand Ducru acquired the property and lent it his name — the second half, beaucaillou, a nod to the beautiful stones, the celebrated Günzian pebbles that define the vineyard's character. The 1855 Classification confirmed what the Bordeaux trade already knew: this was a 2nd Grand Cru Classé of the first order, ranked among the finest wines of the Médoc.

In 1941, the Borie family took ownership, beginning what has become one of the most stable and committed stewardships in the appellation. Bruno-Eugène Borie assumed the direction in 2003 and has since guided the château with a clear sense of purpose: to preserve the classical identity of the wine while responding honestly to the demands of modern viticulture.

Terroir: Günzian gravel above the Gironde

The 75-hectare vineyard occupies a series of gently elevated slopes facing east towards the Gironde estuary — a position that brings natural drainage, reflected warmth, and the moderating influence of the river. Beneath the surface, the soils are a layered combination of Günzian gravel — large quartz pebbles deposited during an ancient glacial period — over a subsoil of clay and limestone. Environmental commitment: organic conversion from 2018

Château Ducru Beaucaillou holds HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and embarked on a full organic conversion beginning with the 2018 vintage — a meaningful commitment for an estate of this scale and standing. The transition reflects Bruno-Eugène Borie's conviction that the long-term quality of the wine depends on the long-term health of the soil. Synthetic herbicides and pesticides have been progressively eliminated, replaced by more labour-intensive, soil-respecting practices across all 75 hectares.
