A château rooted in the history of Pomerol

The origins of Clos l'Eglise reach back to the eighteenth century, when the property was already recorded in the registers of the commune of Pomerol, in the Gironde. For generations it remained one of the appellation's quietly respected names — known to those who knew Pomerol well, yet never seeking the limelight. That changed in 1997, when Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard acquired the château for €12 million, a figure that made headlines at the time as a record transaction for the appellation. The purchase signalled not merely a change of ownership, but a clear statement of ambition: to realise the full potential of this exceptional parcel of land.

Since then, the château has been guided by Sylviane's daughter, Hélène Garcin, and her husband Patrice Lévèque, who have brought both rigour and sensitivity to the estate. Their approach is unhurried and precise — the kind of stewardship that a property of this age and standing demands.

Terroir: clay, gravel, and iron

The 6-hectare vineyard sits on the characteristic soils of the Pomerol plateau: argilo-graveleux — clay-gravel in composition — with significant deposits of crasses de fer, the iron-rich subsoil formations that are a hallmark of the finest Pomerol terroirs.
