List of products by brand CLOS DU MARQUIS

Planted across 45 hectares of quaternary graves at Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, Clos du Marquis is a Bordeaux red of genuine Médoc pedigree, sitting on a west-facing plateau at twenty metres' elevation. Founded in 1902 by the Delon family, it takes its name from the Petit Clos adjoining historic Château de Léoville, once home to the Marquis de Las Cases. Distinct from Léoville Las Cases, it has earned recognition as a first wine in its own right, blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc with quiet authority. At Halles Quercamps, we selected this château for the rigour of its viticulture, the clarity of its identity and the consistency it delivers vintage after vintage on the graves of Saint-Julien. A Médoc red of real character — precise, generous and built to age.

Clos du Marquis is one of the Saint-Julien-Beychevelle reds we follow most closely at Halles Quercamps. Founded in 1902 by the Delon family, this 45-hectare château on quaternary graves has established itself, vintage after vintage, as a first wine in its own right — a distinction it has earned rather than inherited.

A vineyard rooted in the history of Saint-Julien

The name Clos du Marquis refers directly to the Petit Clos adjoining the Château de Léoville, the historic residence of the Marquis de Las Cases. When the Domaines Delon created this château in 1902, they drew on a parcel with deep historical resonance in the appellation. Over the following century, the vineyard was developed as an entirely separate entity from Léoville Las Cases — sharing the same family ownership and the same commitment to quality, but vinified and presented as a distinct wine with its own identity and its own following.

Terroir: graves, altitude and a westerly aspect

The 45 hectares of Clos du Marquis sit on the western plateau of the Saint-Julien appellation, at roughly twenty metres above sea level — a modest but meaningful elevation in the flat Médoc landscape. The soils are quaternary graves: deep, well-drained gravel deposits that warm quickly in the growing season, stress the vine just enough to concentrate the fruit, and lend the wines their characteristic mineral backbone. The encépagement is a classic Médoc blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with Cabernet Sauvignon providing the structural spine and Merlot contributing roundness and mid-palate weight. The westerly exposure brings afternoon sun and good air circulation, helping to achieve even ripening across the plateau.

Winemaking: the rigour of a first wine

Clos du Marquis is produced with the same attention to detail one would expect of a classified growth. The Delon family's approach at Domaines Delon has always prioritised precision in the vineyard and restraint in the cellar. The result is a wine that reflects its terroir honestly: structured and age-worthy, with the firm tannins and dark fruit character typical of Saint-Julien, yet with sufficient generosity to be approachable in its youth. It is, in the truest sense, a first wine — not a second label, not a declassification, but a wine conceived and crafted to stand on its own terms.

The wines of Clos du Marquis

The château produces a single colour from its Saint-Julien terroir:

Why we have selected Clos du Marquis

We have listed Clos du Marquis at Halles Quercamps for three reasons that matter to us as wine merchants. First, its identity: this is a château that knows exactly what it is — a serious Saint-Julien red with a clear sense of place and a long track record of consistency. Second, its terroir credentials: 45 hectares of quaternary graves on a well-exposed plateau is a genuinely strong foundation, and the wines reflect it. Third, its position in the appellation: recognised as a first wine in its own right rather than a second label, it offers our customers access to the character of Saint-Julien at a level of quality that is difficult to match. We recommend it to confirmed Bordeaux enthusiasts looking to build a Médoc cellar, and to those who enjoy pairing structured reds with roast lamb, aged hard cheeses or game. It rewards patience in the cellar and generosity at the table.
