Chenin Blanc Loire Valley — France's Most Versatile White Wine Grape

Chenin Blanc — also known locally as Pineau de la Loire — is one of France's most remarkable white wine grapes. Planted primarily along the Middle Loire, it produces an extraordinary range of styles from a single variety: bone-dry mineral whites, off-dry food-friendly bottles, luscious sweet wines, and excellent sparkling wines.

The Great Chenin Blanc Appellations

Vouvray — perhaps the most famous Chenin Blanc appellation, producing wines ranging from brut sparkling to sec, demi-sec, and moelleux (sweet). The clay-limestone soils of Vouvray give wines of extraordinary longevity; great Vouvray can age for decades, developing beeswax, quince, and honey notes of remarkable complexity.

Savennières — the Loire's most austere and mineral Chenin Blanc. The steep schist terraces of Savennières produce bone-dry wines of fierce acidity and striking mineral intensity. The single-vineyard wines of Coulée de Serrant (a biodynamic estate with its own AOC) are among France's most iconic white wines.

Quarts de Chaume & Bonnezeaux — two of France's greatest sweet wine appellations, both producing botrytised Chenin Blanc of extraordinary richness. These are wines for decades-long cellaring, gradually developing astonishing complexity.

Montlouis-sur-Loire — on the south bank of the Loire opposite Vouvray, producing similar styles with slightly earlier-maturing character.

Saumur — produces excellent dry and sparkling Chenin Blanc, including the famous Saumur Mousseux and Crémant de Loire.

Great dry Chenin Blanc from Savennières and Vouvray is among the longest-lived white wine in France. Top producers' wines from good vintages can age 20–40 years or more, developing extraordinary complexity — beeswax, lanolin, quince, dried apricot, honey — while retaining remarkable freshness.
