A family estate with roots going back to 1934

The estate was born from the union of two family vineyards: those of André Crochet and those of Lucien Picard, a pioneering figure who was among the very first in the Sancerre appellation to bottle his own wines — a practice he adopted as early as 1934, long before it became common in the Loire. This founding commitment to quality at source has shaped the estate's identity ever since.

In 1983, Gilles Crochet took over the reins, bringing with him a formation that set him apart: studies in oenology at Dijon, followed by a formative period at Domaine Dujac in Morey-Saint-Denis. That Burgundian schooling left a lasting mark on his approach — a concern for precision, for expressing individual terroirs, and for restraint in the cellar. Alongside Laurence Crochet, he has steadily built the estate into one of Sancerre's most coherent and respected addresses.

Terroir: a geological mosaic above Bué

The 35 hectares of Domaine Lucien Crochet are spread across the slopes surrounding Bué, with east-, south-, and west-facing exposures at altitudes ranging from 240 to 280 metres. The soils are a textbook cross-section of the Sancerrois: terres blanches (the classic white marlstone of Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian origin), caillottes (shallow, stony limestone soils that drain freely and warm quickly), and griottes (a local term for reddish, iron-rich clay-limestone). Each soil type lends a distinct character to the wines — the terres blanches giving depth and minerality, the caillottes brightness and early aromatic expression, the griottes a rounder, more structured profile.

Certified organic farming

The entire estate is certified under Agriculture Biologique, a commitment that reflects both a philosophy and a practical engagement with the health of these ancient soils. Working without synthetic herbicides or pesticides, the team at Domaine Lucien Crochet allows the full character of each parcel to express itself — a prerequisite, in Gilles Crochet's view, for wines of genuine terroir.

The wine range: white, red, and rosé Sancerre

The estate produces across all three colours permitted in the Sancerre AOC, with both Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir planted throughout the domaine's holdings:

  • Sancerre Blanc — the backbone of the range, drawn from Sauvignon Blanc vines on terres blanches and caillottes; expect precise citrus, flint, and a saline mineral finish.
  • Sancerre Rouge — Pinot Noir vinified with Burgundian care; silky in texture, with red fruit and a characteristic earthy note from the clay-limestone soils.
  • Sancerre Rosé — a delicate, dry expression of Pinot Noir; pale in colour, crisp, and food-friendly.
