List of products by brand DOMAINE JEAN-LUC COLOMBO

Planted on the steep granite slopes of Cornas in the Ardèche, Domaine Jean-Luc Colombo farms 6 hectares of Syrah under organic certification, with yields held firmly below 20 hl/ha. Founded in 1984 by Jean-Luc Colombo — a pivotal figure in the modernisation of the Cornas appellation — the estate produced its first vintage of Les Ruchets in 1987. Since 2010, Laure Colombo has led the winemaking, steering the estate through its conversion to organic farming, with full certification achieved in 2015. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this estate for the rigour of its work on granitic terroir, the precision of its Syrah, and the consistency of a demanding family approach. A benchmark for lovers of serious red wines from the Vallée du Rhône.

Domaine Jean-Luc Colombo stands as one of the most serious and committed estates in the Cornas appellation, farming 6 hectares of Syrah on decomposed granite soils with yields deliberately held below 20 hl/ha under full organic certification.

A domaine born from a passion for Cornas

In 1984, Jean-Luc Colombo founded his estate and the Centre Œnologique des Côtes du Rhône simultaneously, establishing himself in Cornas at a time when the appellation was little known beyond a small circle of enthusiasts. A trained oenologist, he brought a rigorous, science-informed approach to a region that had long relied on tradition alone. His ambition was clear: to reveal the full potential of Cornas Syrah on its ancient granite terraces. The first vintage of Les Ruchets followed in 1987, quickly earning the estate a reputation for structured, age-worthy reds that placed Cornas firmly on the map for serious collectors.

Terroir: granite, steep slopes and southern exposure

The estate's 6 hectares are spread across the characteristic coteaux and terraced hillsides of Cornas, with a full southern exposure arranged in a natural amphitheatre. The soils are composed of decomposed granite — known locally as gore — which drains freely, forces the vine's roots deep, and imparts a mineral tension that is the hallmark of the appellation. The steep gradients demand hand-harvesting and careful canopy management, contributing directly to the low yields that define the estate's philosophy. Syrah is the sole grape variety, as the Cornas AOC demands, and on this terroir it produces wines of notable depth, dark-fruited intensity and firm but fine tannins.

Organic certification and the Laure Colombo era

In 2010, Laure Colombo took over the winemaking, bringing fresh energy and a clear commitment to environmental responsibility. She initiated the conversion to organic farming — a significant undertaking on these demanding slopes — and the estate received full organic certification in 2015. The transition has reinforced the estate's connection to its terroir: no synthetic inputs, careful soil management, and a winemaking approach that privileges the expression of Cornas granite over technical intervention. The Colombo family — Jean-Luc, Anne and Laure — remains entirely involved, ensuring continuity of vision across generations.

The wine range

Domaine Jean-Luc Colombo produces exclusively red wines under the Cornas appellation, each cuvée reflecting a distinct facet of the estate's granitic terroir:

  • Les Ruchets — the estate's founding cuvée (first vintage 1987), a structured, cellar-worthy Cornas from the oldest vines, combining dark fruit, mineral grip and considerable ageing potential.
  • Les Terres Brûlées — a more approachable expression of Cornas Syrah, with ripe, generous fruit and a supple texture, suited to earlier drinking while retaining the appellation's characteristic backbone.
  • La Louvée — a single-parcel selection from a specific lieu-dit, offering precision and terroir definition for those wishing to explore the finer distinctions within Cornas.

Why we have selected Domaine Jean-Luc Colombo

We have listed Domaine Jean-Luc Colombo because it represents, in our view, one of the clearest arguments for Cornas as a serious alternative to the more celebrated names of the northern Rhône. Three things set it apart. First, the yields: at under 20 hl/ha, the concentration in the glass is earned in the vineyard, not engineered in the cellar. Second, the organic commitment: Laure Colombo's conversion was not a marketing exercise but a genuine shift in how the estate relates to its granite soils. Third, the family continuity: nearly four decades of accumulated knowledge of a single appellation, now carried forward by the next generation. We recommend these wines to enthusiasts building a cellar of serious Rhône reds, and to anyone who appreciates Syrah at its most structured and mineral. At the table, look to slow-roasted lamb, game birds, or a well-aged hard cheese.
