List of products by brand DOMAINE MARDON
Established in Quincy in the Cher département, Domaine Mardon quietly and consistently demonstrates what the Loire can achieve with Sauvignon Blanc: precise, terroir-driven whites farmed organically on soils of rare geological complexity, by a family whose roots in this appellation stretch back to 1870.
A family estate rooted in the Berry since 1870
It was Edme Houssier who planted the first vines of what would become Domaine Mardon around 1870, on the alluvial terraces that skirt the Cher river. The estate passed steadily from generation to generation, accumulating both experience and a deep attachment to the Quincy appellation — one of the Loire Valley's oldest, recognised as an AOC as early as 1936, yet still relatively little known beyond committed enthusiasts of French white wine.
In 2003, Hélène Mardon, the fifth generation of her family to work this land, took over the estate alongside her partner Luc Tabordet. Their arrival marked a turning point: a commitment to organic farming across the full 16 hectares, a decision that reflects both a respect for the soils inherited and a clear-eyed view of where quality viticulture is heading.
Terroir: ancient alluvial soils over lacustrine clays
The vineyards of Domaine Mardon sit on a distinctive geological foundation: ancient sandy-gravelly alluvial deposits laid over the lacustrine clays of the Berry basin. These soils, well-drained yet capable of retaining sufficient moisture during dry summers, are ideally suited to Sauvignon Blanc — the sole grape variety permitted under the Quincy AOC. The combination of gravel and clay gives the wines their characteristic tension: a lively, mineral backbone tempered by a certain roundness and depth that sets Quincy apart from its more celebrated Loire neighbours.
Organic farming: a commitment across the entire estate
The estate holds organic certification (Agriculture Biologique), and the approach is applied consistently across all 16 hectares. No synthetic herbicides, pesticides, or fertilisers are used in the vineyard. The focus is on soil health, vine balance, and allowing the terroir to express itself without chemical interference. This rigour in the vineyard translates directly into wines that feel alive and site-specific — a quality that matters greatly to us when we are selecting estates for our list.
The wine range at Domaine Mardon
The estate produces exclusively white wine under the Quincy AOC, from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. The range reflects the different expressions that the estate's varied alluvial soils can yield:
- Quincy blanc — the estate's core expression: fresh, mineral, and precise, with the citrus and white flower character typical of the appellation, underpinned by a firm, clean finish.
- Quincy blanc — cuvées de terroir — where individual parcels or specific soil profiles are vinified separately, offering a more detailed portrait of the estate's geological diversity.
Why we have selected Domaine Mardon
At Halles Quercamps, we have listed Domaine Mardon for three straightforward reasons. First, the consistency of the work in the vineyard: organic farming across 16 hectares is a genuine commitment, not a marketing posture, and it shows in the quality and character of the wines. Second, the authenticity of the appellation: Quincy remains one of the Loire's most honest and undervalued appellations for Sauvignon Blanc, and Domaine Mardon is among its most dependable producers. Third, the depth of family history: five generations on the same soils since 1870 is a form of expertise that cannot be manufactured.
These wines are particularly well suited to lovers of mineral, food-friendly whites — think grilled river fish, goat's cheese from the nearby Berry, or a simple plateau of shellfish. They also reward those building a cellar with an eye for value and regional character over fashion.
