A tuffeau terroir on the south bank of the Loire

Dampierre-sur-Loire, in Maine-et-Loire, sits at the heart of what makes the Val de Loire so distinctive beneath the surface: tuffeau, the soft, porous Cretaceous limestone that defines the character of Saumur and its wines. This pale, chalky subsoil drains freely, forces roots deep in search of water and nutrients, and lends the wines a mineral tension that is immediately recognisable. At Château du Hureau, the surface soils are clay-sandy in character, adding a degree of suppleness to the natural austerity of the bedrock. The estate's coteaux face south-east, catching the morning sun and benefiting from the moderating influence of the Loire below — conditions that allow Cabernet Franc to ripen steadily without losing freshness.

Five generations and a twelfth-century cellar

The Vatan family connection to this site spans five generations, though it was Philippe Vatan who formally established the estate in its current form in 1987. That continuity of presence matters here: the cave troglo — a troglodyte cellar carved directly into the tuffeau cliff in the twelfth century — has been in family use throughout, providing naturally stable temperatures and humidity that make it one of the finest ageing environments in the appellation. The cellar is not a marketing feature; it is a working tool, and its conditions shape the élevage of every wine produced at Château du Hureau.

Organic farming, certified since 2011

The estate converted to organic agriculture and received its AB certification in 2011. In the vineyard, this means no synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fertilisers — a commitment that, on tuffeau soils, reinforces the natural expression of terroir rather than masking it. The two grape varieties cultivated here — Cabernet Franc for the reds and Chenin Blanc for the whites — are both well suited to organic viticulture in the Loire, provided yields are managed with care and the vine canopy is handled attentively through the season.
