List of products by brand CHATEAU PRADEAUX

Set on hillside slopes facing the sea at Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer in the Var, Château Pradeaux farms 26 hectares in organic conversion across the Bandol appellation, with yields held to just 28 hl/ha. In the Portalis family since 1752, the estate is today run by Edouard and Etienne Portalis — heirs to a lineage that helped bring the Bandol AOC into existence in 1941. Mourvèdre, the appellation's defining grape, finds genuine depth here on deep clay-limestone soils. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this estate for the rigour of its viticulture, the consistency of its style, and its singular place in the history of Bandol. A Provençal reference we are proud to champion.

Château Pradeaux stands as one of the most uncompromising expressions of the Bandol appellation: 26 hectares farmed in organic conversion, yields among the lowest in the region, and a family continuity stretching back nearly three centuries.

A château woven into the history of Bandol

The story of Château Pradeaux and the Portalis family has been inseparable since 1752, when the estate passed into their hands through Jean-Marie-Etienne Portalis — one of the principal authors of the Napoleonic Civil Code. It is a lineage that has shaped not only French legal history but the very identity of Bandol as a wine appellation. In 1941, the Comtesse Arlette Portalis played a direct role in the creation of the Bandol AOC, helping to define the standards and boundaries that still govern the appellation today. Few estates anywhere in France can claim such a tangible connection between family history and appellation history. Today, Edouard and Etienne Portalis continue that tradition, managing the estate with the same long-term outlook that has characterised Château Pradeaux across the generations.

Terroir: clay-limestone slopes above the sea

Located at Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer in the Var, the estate's 26 hectares are planted on hillside terraces facing the Mediterranean. The soils are deep clay-limestone — argilo-calcaire — which provide excellent water retention through the dry Provençal summers and lend the wines their characteristic structure and mineral backbone. Yields are deliberately contained at 28 hl/ha, well below the appellation average, a decision that speaks to the estate's philosophy: quality over volume, always. The principal grape variety is Mourvèdre, the soul of Bandol rouge, complemented by Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan, and Counoise for the rosé and blended wines.

Organic conversion and viticulture

Château Pradeaux is currently in conversion to organic farming, a commitment that reflects both the estate's respect for its terroir and the broader direction of serious viticulture in Provence. Working without synthetic treatments, the team focuses on soil health and vine balance — an approach that, combined with the naturally low yields, produces fruit of genuine concentration and character.

The wines of Château Pradeaux

The estate produces two colours under the Bandol appellation, each expressing the terroir of Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer in a distinct register:

  • Bandol Rouge — Mourvèdre-dominant, structured and age-worthy, with the depth and dark-fruited intensity that defines great Bandol rouge. Built for the cellar.
  • Bandol Rosé — Pale, precise, and savoury, drawing on Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Cinsault for a rosé of genuine vinous character rather than easy fruit.

Why we have selected Château Pradeaux

At Halles Quercamps, we have been listing Château Pradeaux because it represents everything we look for in a Provençal estate: rigorous viticulture, a clear and consistent house style, and a historical depth that gives the wines genuine meaning beyond the glass. The combination of near-three-century family ownership, a direct role in the founding of the Bandol AOC, and a move towards organic farming makes this one of the most coherent and compelling addresses in the appellation. We recommend these wines to confirmed amateurs who appreciate structured, cellar-worthy reds — the Bandol rouge rewards patience of five years and more — and to those who seek a rosé with real substance. At the table, the rouge is a natural partner for slow-roasted lamb or aged hard cheeses; the rosé holds its own alongside grilled fish or a Provençal daube.
