A family estate with more than 160 years of history

The story of Château Gleon begins in 1861, when the Bonnes family — direct ancestors of today's Montanié — acquired this hillside property in the heart of the Corbières. For over a century and a half, the estate has never left family hands. That continuity is rare in any wine region, and in Languedoc-Roussillon it speaks to a particular attachment to place: these vines, these soils, this landscape have been tended across six generations without interruption. Philippe Montanié now leads the estate, carrying forward a tradition that is both deeply rooted and clearly forward-looking.

Terroir: schist, clay-limestone and the Corbières sun

The 50 hectares of Château Gleon are planted across the south-facing slopes and terraces that typify the best sites of the Corbières appellation. The soils alternate between schist and clay-limestone — a combination that brings both mineral tension and structural depth to the wines. Schist, in particular, drains freely, forces the vine to search deep for water and nutrients, and imparts that characteristic stony, almost smoky quality that distinguishes the finest Corbières reds. The full-south exposure ensures generous ripening even in cooler vintages, while the altitude and the Tramontane wind moderate the heat and preserve freshness. The grape varieties planted reflect the traditional palette of the Languedoc: Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault for the reds and rosés, with Malvoisie contributing to the whites.

Certified organic since 2020

Philippe Montanié initiated the conversion to organic farming in 2017, and the estate received its official Agriculture Biologique certification in 2020. The decision reflects both a personal conviction and a practical response to the terroir: on well-drained schist and clay-limestone, with good natural ventilation, organic viticulture is not a constraint but a logical extension of what the land already offers. No synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fertilisers are used across the 50 hectares. The result is a vineyard in better balance, producing fruit of greater concentration and clarity.

The estate produces across all three colours, each expressing the Corbières appellation and the Languedoc terroir in a distinct register:

Reds: the backbone of the range — structured, warm and age-worthy, built on Carignan, Grenache and Syrah with Mourvèdre adding depth and longevity.
Rosés: dry and characterful, shaped by Cinsault and Grenache, with the freshness that the Tramontane wind and south-facing terraces naturally encourage.
Whites: produced from Malvoisie, offering a less common but genuinely interesting expression of white Languedoc, with aromatic complexity and a distinctive mineral edge.
