A name rooted in history

The name Villemaurine derives from Ville Maure, a reference dating to the eighth century when Moorish forces are said to have camped on this very hillside during their incursion into Aquitaine. Few Bordeaux properties carry a name with quite such a tangible historical resonance. The château was substantially renovated from 2007 onwards under previous owner Justin Onclin, who invested considerably in both the vineyard and the winery before the Lefévère family completed their acquisition in 2021. The family already held Château Sansonnet within the Saint-Émilion appellation, and their arrival at Villemaurine signals a clear ambition to build a coherent estate portfolio on some of the appellation's finest soils. Since the takeover, the focus has been on consolidating the work of the previous decade while bringing the precision and consistency that define the Lefévère approach across their properties.

Terroir: limestone, clay, and a privileged position

The 7-hectare vineyard occupies a genuinely privileged position on the plateau and the eastern slope of Saint-Émilion's historic centre. The soils are principally argilo-calcaire — clay over limestone — with a significant presence of calcaire à astéries, the fossiliferous star-oyster limestone that underlies the greatest terroirs of the appellation's plateau and côtes. This limestone bedrock imparts the characteristic mineral tension and structural precision that distinguishes the finest Saint-Émilion reds from those grown on the sandier, more alluvial soils of the plain. The western parcels carry a sandier, silty character, while the eastern sections are notably more clay-rich, lending depth and weight to the blend. The plateau exposure ensures good drainage and even ripening across the growing season — conditions that suit both principal grape varieties planted here.
