Château Siran extends across 25 hectares of siliceous gravel at Labarde, on the southern reaches of the Margaux appellation. In the Miailhe family since 1859, the château is today led by Édouard Miailhe, the fifth generation, who has committed the estate to organic conversion.

A gravel terroir at the heart of Margaux

Labarde occupies the southernmost fringe of the Margaux appellation, where the Médoc plateau yields soils of siliceous and sandy gravel over ancient alluvial deposits. The vineyard sits on a well-drained plateau with a gentle natural slope — conditions that encourage deep root development and lend the wines their characteristic finesse and precision. This corner of Margaux may sit at the appellation's southern boundary, yet it shares the same fundamental geology that defines the great Médoc crus: free-draining gravel that stresses the vine just enough to concentrate flavour without sacrificing elegance.

Six centuries of history, five generations of family

The history of Château Siran reaches back to 1428, making it one of the older documented properties in the Médoc. Before the Miailhe family acquired it in 1859, the estate passed through the hands of families connected to the ancestors of the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec — a detail that lends the château a cultural resonance quite apart from its viticultural credentials. Today, Édouard Miailhe represents the fifth generation of a dynasty that has shaped the property's identity over more than 160 years. The château also holds a singular distinction in Bordeaux: it is home to the only nuclear-proof wine cellar in the region, constructed in the 1980s — a remarkable, if eccentric, testament to the lengths one family will go to protect its vintages.

Organic conversion and a commitment to the terroir

Château Siran is currently engaged in organic conversion, reflecting a broader shift in the estate's approach to viticulture.
