List of products by brand CHATEAU SIGALAS RABAUD
Château Sigalas Rabaud occupies a singular position among the great sweet wines of Bordeaux: classified as a Premier Cru in 1855, it is also the smallest château of that rank, with just 14 hectares on the commune of Bommes, at the heart of the Sauternes appellation.
A history rooted in Bommes since 1660
The origins of Château Sigalas Rabaud date to 1660, making it one of the oldest estates in the Sauternes appellation. The property was acquired in 1863 by Henri de Sigalas, whose name it still bears today. From 1950, the de Lambert des Granges family became its custodians — an inheritance that has passed through six generations, with the family taking formal ownership in 2007. This continuity of stewardship is not merely a point of heritage pride; it has shaped a coherent, long-term approach to viticulture and winemaking that is increasingly rare among classified growths of this standing.
Terroir: gravels, clay and a south-facing ridge
The 14-hectare vineyard sits on a gravelly ridge — a croupe graveleuse — oriented due south, offering optimal sun exposure for the slow, patient ripening that Sauternes demands. The soils are silico-clayey gravels interspersed with sandy zones, underlain by a clay subsoil. This combination drains freely while retaining sufficient moisture to sustain the vines through the growing season. The south-facing aspect encourages the morning mists that rise from the Ciron river nearby, creating the humid conditions in which Botrytis cinerea — noble rot — develops. It is this noble rot that concentrates the sugars, glycerol and aromatic complexity that define great Sauternes. The grape varieties planted reflect the classic Sauternes palette: Sémillon dominates, supported by Sauvignon Blanc and a small proportion of Muscadelle. Yields are kept to a strict 17 hl/ha — well below the appellation average — ensuring that each vine produces a small quantity of intensely concentrated fruit.
Certifications and a commitment to responsible viticulture
Château Sigalas Rabaud holds both HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and Terra Vitis certifications, reflecting a genuine commitment to environmentally responsible farming. These are not decorative labels: they represent measurable standards in biodiversity, water management, and the reduction of chemical inputs. For a classified growth of this age and prestige, this engagement with sustainable viticulture is a meaningful statement of intent for the generations to come.
The wines of Château Sigalas Rabaud
The château produces exclusively white wines under the Sauternes appellation. The range is focused and deliberately restrained in volume, in keeping with the estate's small surface area and low yields.
- Château Sigalas Rabaud (Grand Vin) — the Premier Cru Classé Sauternes: a rich, botrytised white of great concentration, balancing honeyed depth with the freshness characteristic of the Bommes terroir.
- Second wine / négociant selection — where applicable, a more approachable expression of the same terroir, vinified with the same rigour.
The wines are produced exclusively in white, as is the tradition of the Sauternes appellation, and are suited both to early drinking and extended cellaring.
Why we have selected Château Sigalas Rabaud
We have listed Château Sigalas Rabaud because it represents something increasingly difficult to find: a genuine Premier Cru Classé Sauternes produced on a human scale, with no compromise on quality. The 17 hl/ha yields alone tell you something important about the seriousness of the approach. The south-facing gravels of Bommes consistently produce liquoreux of precision and balance — wines where concentration never tips into heaviness, and where freshness keeps the palate engaged. We recommend these wines to enthusiasts building a serious cellar, and equally to those seeking a considered gift for a significant occasion. At table, they are superb alongside foie gras, Roquefort, or a ripe, washed-rind cheese — and rewarding, too, as a dessert wine with stone fruit or almond-based pastries.
