A history rooted in Bommes since 1660

The origins of Château Sigalas Rabaud date to 1660, making it one of the oldest estates in the Sauternes appellation. The property was acquired in 1863 by Henri de Sigalas, whose name it still bears today. From 1950, the de Lambert des Granges family became its custodians — an inheritance that has passed through six generations, with the family taking formal ownership in 2007. This continuity of stewardship is not merely a point of heritage pride; it has shaped a coherent, long-term approach to viticulture and winemaking that is increasingly rare among classified growths of this standing.

Terroir: gravels, clay and a south-facing ridge

The 14-hectare vineyard sits on a gravelly ridge — a croupe graveleuse — oriented due south, offering optimal sun exposure for the slow, patient ripening that Sauternes demands. The soils are silico-clayey gravels interspersed with sandy zones, underlain by a clay subsoil. This combination drains freely while retaining sufficient moisture to sustain the vines through the growing season. The south-facing aspect encourages the morning mists that rise from the Ciron river nearby, creating the humid conditions in which Botrytis cinerea — noble rot — develops. It is this noble rot that concentrates the sugars, glycerol and aromatic complexity that define great Sauternes. The grape varieties planted reflect the classic Sauternes palette: Sémillon dominates, supported by Sauvignon Blanc and a small proportion of Muscadelle. Yields are kept to a strict 17 hl/ha — well below the appellation average — ensuring that each vine produces a small quantity of intensely concentrated fruit.
