Three centuries of history on the Pomerol plateau

The earliest records of Château Rouget date to 1700, making it one of the best-documented estates in Pomerol. By 1868 it was listed among the five finest crus of the appellation — a testament to terroir rather than administrative decree.

In 1992, the Labruyère family, already established in Beaujolais, acquired the château and undertook a comprehensive programme of vineyard replanting and winery renovation. The results, visible across successive vintages, confirm the wisdom of that investment.

A terroir of clay, gravel, and iron

The 17 hectares sit on the Pomerol plateau, where clay-gravel and clay-silica soils overlie a ferruginous alios subsoil — the iron-rich hardpan defining the finest Pomerol terroirs. It retains moisture in dry summers while encouraging deep roots that deliver concentration and mineral tension.

Merlot accounts for 85% of plantings, lending roundness, plum-fruit richness, and supple tannins. The remaining 15% of Cabernet Franc adds aromatic lift and the structure needed for graceful ageing.

Winemaking: precision in the service of terroir

Under the Labruyère family, the cellar philosophy mirrors the vineyard: respect for terroir, with technical precision applied where it serves the wine. Gradual vine renewal supports depth and complexity, while élevage is calibrated to integrate oak without masking the fruit and mineral character of Pomerol.

Château Rouget produces red wine exclusively under the Pomerol appellation:

  • Château Rouget (Pomerol) — the grand vin: structured and fleshy, built on Merlot, with the depth and ageing potential of a leading Pomerol cru.
  • Le Carillon de Rouget (Pomerol) — the second wine: approachable earlier, sharing the same terroir character and careful winemaking.

Both are produced exclusively in red, in keeping with right-bank Bordeaux tradition.
