List of products by brand CHATEAU DE RAYNE VIGNEAU
Château Rayne Vigneau stands among the most firmly established names in the Sauternes appellation. A 1er Grand Cru Classé since the 1855 classification, situated in the commune of Bommes in the Gironde, it represents with quiet authority what the Sauternais does best in sweet white wine.
A history rooted in Bommes since 1635
The estate's origins are documented as far back as 1635, making Château Rayne Vigneau one of the oldest recorded properties in the Sauternais. Its defining moment came in 1855, when it was elevated to 1er Grand Cru Classé de Sauternes under the stewardship of Mme de Rayne, born Catherine de Pontac — a name already synonymous with the finest Bordeaux estates. The château passed through several hands over the following century and a half, including a period from 2004 to 2015 under CA Grands Crus, the fine wine arm of Crédit Agricole. In 2015, it was acquired by the Trésor du Patrimoine group, led by Derek Rémy Smith, who has since committed to a programme of sustained investment in both vineyard management and winemaking precision.
A singular terroir above the Sauternais
The château's 84 hectares occupy a commanding ridge above the Sauternais, with west-facing slopes rising to an altitude of 75 metres — a topography that sets Rayne Vigneau apart from many of its neighbours. The soils are composed of sandy gravels over a clay subsoil, a structure that promotes excellent drainage and encourages the vines to root deeply. What makes this terroir genuinely remarkable, however, is the presence of semi-precious stones — agates, amethysts, onyx, and sapphires — scattered throughout the subsoil. This geological curiosity is not merely anecdotal: it contributes to the mineral tension that characterises the wines. The encépagement is led by Sémillon at 74%, supported by Sauvignon Blanc at 24% and a small proportion of Muscadelle at 2%. Yields are kept deliberately low, between 10 and 15 hl/ha, reflecting the exacting standards expected of a classified Sauternes property.
Viticulture and certification
Château Rayne Vigneau holds HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale), a commitment to responsible viticulture that encompasses biodiversity, water management, and the measured use of plant-protection products. This certification reflects the direction taken since the 2015 change of ownership and aligns with the growing expectations of informed wine buyers who look beyond the label to the practices behind it.
The wines of Château Rayne Vigneau
The château produces exclusively white wines within the Sauternes appellation. The range includes:
- Château Rayne Vigneau — the grand vin, a 1er Grand Cru Classé Sauternes of notable depth and precision, combining the richness of botrytised Sémillon with the freshness brought by Sauvignon Blanc
- Madame de Rayne — the second wine, offering earlier accessibility while retaining the characteristic style of the estate
- Rayne Sec — a dry white Bordeaux produced from the same encépagement, providing a contrasting expression of the terroir outside the liquoreux style
All wines are produced exclusively from the château's own 84-hectare vineyard in Bommes, with no bought-in fruit.
Why we have selected Château Rayne Vigneau
We have listed Château Rayne Vigneau because it offers something increasingly rare in the Sauternes appellation: a classified growth of genuine pedigree that has been reinvigorated rather than simply maintained. Since the 2015 acquisition, the wines have shown a renewed focus — tighter, more mineral, and more consistent across vintages. The combination of a remarkable terroir (those semi-precious stones are not a marketing flourish — they are a geological reality that shapes the wine), very low yields, and a clear environmental commitment gives us confidence in recommending this château to our customers. We would suggest these wines to confirmed amateurs of Bordeaux liquoreux who are building or replenishing a cellar, as well as to those seeking a considered gift for a significant occasion. At table, the grand vin pairs beautifully with Roquefort or a rich foie gras terrine; the drier expressions work well alongside grilled langoustines or a finely seasoned turbot.
