A founding story rooted in Yquem
The château was founded in 1850, yet it missed the celebrated 1855 classification simply through lack of sufficient trading history at the time — a quirk of timing rather than any reflection of its quality. The estate's modern chapter began in 1972, when Pierre Meslier, who had served for many years as régisseur of the legendary Château d'Yquem, acquired Raymond-Lafon and set about applying the same exacting standards he had honed at the greatest sweet wine estate in the world. His influence was immediate and lasting. Under his stewardship, Château Raymond-Lafon earned a reputation that transcended its unclassified status, attracting the attention of collectors and critics alike. Today, the château is managed by his three children — Jean-Pierre, Charles-Henri and Marie-Françoise Meslier — who have preserved every aspect of their father's philosophy while bringing their own generation's energy and precision to the work.
A terroir of rare distinction
The château's 18 hectares are spread across three of the appellation's most historic communes: Sauternes itself, Bommes and Preignac. The geographical position is remarkable: the vineyards are surrounded on all sides by classified growths, including Yquem, Suduiraut and Lafaurie-Peyraguey — as fine a neighbourhood as any in Bordeaux. The soils are gravelly at the surface, sitting above an argilo-calcareous subsoil that provides both excellent drainage and the mineral depth that defines the finest Sauternes. This combination of free-draining gravel and moisture-retaining subsoil creates the ideal conditions for the development of Botrytis cinerea — noble rot — the essential catalyst for great Sauternes.
Winemaking: discipline above all
The vineyard is planted to 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, a classic Sauternes balance that gives the wines their characteristic richness and freshness. What truly sets Raymond-Lafon apart is the discipline applied in the vineyard and the chai alike. Yields are held to an extraordinary 8.5 hl/ha — a figure that speaks volumes about the concentration achieved in each bottle. Harvesting is carried out in successive tries, with pickers passing through the vineyard multiple times to select only the most perfectly botrytised berries at each pass. There are no shortcuts here, and none have ever been contemplated.
