List of products by brand CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD

Established on the Plateau de Mouton outside Pauillac in the Gironde, Château Mouton Rothschild covers 90 hectares of deep gravel soils planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon. Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the château was elevated to 1er Grand Cru Classé in 1973 — the sole amendment ever made to the 1855 Classification — and has commissioned a world-renowned artist to design each vintage label since 1945. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the remarkable consistency of its style: a Pauillac red of extraordinary precision, marrying the power of Cabernet Sauvignon with a textural refinement that only the deep graves of the Médoc can produce. A cornerstone of any serious Bordeaux cellar.

Château Mouton Rothschild occupies a singular position in the Bordeaux landscape: elevated to 1er Grand Cru Classé de Pauillac in 1973, it stands as both a benchmark of Médoc rigour and a vision of wine as cultural object. At Halles Quercamps, we list it as one of the most complete expressions the appellation of Pauillac has to offer.

A terroir of the first order on the Médoc gravel

The vineyard extends across 90 hectares around the ridge known as the Plateau de Mouton, which culminates at 27 metres above sea level and slopes gently towards the Gironde estuary. This elevated position, exceptional by Médoc standards, ensures natural drainage and a thermal advantage that ripens the fruit evenly across the growing season. The soils are composed of very deep graves — the coarse gravel and gravelly sands, partly argillaceous, that are the hallmark of the finest Pauillac terroirs. They force the vine roots deep in search of water and minerals, producing grapes of concentration and precision rather than mere volume.

History: from Nathaniel de Rothschild to the 1855 reclassification

The château was acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, establishing the Rothschild family's enduring connection with Pauillac. For over a century, Mouton was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé — a ranking that many considered an injustice given the quality of its wines. In 1973, following decades of advocacy by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the château was officially promoted to 1er Grand Cru Classé, the only modification ever made to the original 1855 Classification. Today the estate is managed by Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA, under the stewardship of Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, Camille Sereys de Rothschild, and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, who took over leadership in 2014.

The artist label: wine as cultural statement

Since 1945, each vintage of Château Mouton Rothschild has carried a label designed by a world-renowned artist — from Picasso and Miró to Bacon and Hirst. This tradition, initiated by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, has made each bottle a collector's object in its own right, without ever distracting from the quality of the wine within. The grape varieties cultivated are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot — the classic Médoc palette, with Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, as befits a great Pauillac.

The wines of Château Mouton Rothschild

The château produces wines in two colours, each reflecting the depth and character of its Pauillac terroir:

  • Red (Rouge) — The grand vin of Château Mouton Rothschild: a structured, age-worthy Pauillac built on Cabernet Sauvignon, with the characteristic cedar, blackcurrant, and graphite profile of the appellation, supported by the gravelly minerality of the Plateau de Mouton.
  • White (Blanc) — A rare and distinctive white Bordeaux produced at the château, offering a counterpoint to the celebrated red and a testament to the breadth of winemaking ambition at Mouton Rothschild.

Why we have selected Château Mouton Rothschild

We have listed Château Mouton Rothschild at Halles Quercamps for three reasons that go beyond its celebrated classification. First, the consistency of style across vintages: whether in a generous year or a more austere one, the château produces a Pauillac of remarkable definition and precision. Second, the depth of the terroir: the deep graves of the Plateau de Mouton impart a mineral backbone and a capacity for long ageing that few properties in the Médoc can match. Third, the cultural dimension of the estate — the artist label tradition since 1945 makes each bottle a considered gift as much as a wine to lay down.

We recommend Château Mouton Rothschild to confirmed Bordeaux enthusiasts seeking a cellar reference, and to those looking for a gift of genuine significance. At the table, it pairs superbly with rack of lamb, aged beef, or a well-matured hard cheese.
