List of products by brand CHATEAU MAJOUREAU

Situated on the south-facing Macarian slopes of Caudrot in the Gironde, Château Majoureau farms 38 hectares of graves and argilo-calcaire soils overlooking the Garonne, producing red and white wines under the Bordeaux appellation. Founded in 1981 by Monique and Bernard Delong, the château has been led since 2002 by Mathieu Delong, fifth generation, who committed the estate to organic farming from 2010. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc make up a balanced range of reds and whites. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the seriousness of its organic approach, the quality of its terroir work, and the consistency it has shown across several vintages. A dependable Gironde address, firmly rooted in its land.

Château Majoureau extends across 38 hectares at Caudrot in the Gironde, on the south-facing Macarian slopes that rise above the Garonne. In organic conversion since 2010, the château produces red and white wines under the Bordeaux appellation, guided by Mathieu Delong, fifth generation of a family that has shaped this terroir for over four decades.

A family château rooted in the Macarian hillsides

The story of Château Majoureau as it stands today begins in 1981, when Monique and Bernard Delong — the fourth generation of the Delong family — formally established the château. Their choice of Caudrot was no accident: the coteaux macariens, a band of gentle slopes running along the right bank of the Garonne south of Bordeaux, offer a combination of full southern exposure and well-drained soils that suit both red and white varieties. The Garonne below acts as a natural thermal regulator, moderating extremes and encouraging slow, even ripening.

In 2002, Mathieu Delong took over the reins, bringing with him a clear ambition to deepen the estate's connection to its land. From 2010, he began transitioning Château Majoureau towards organic viticulture, a commitment that reflects both a personal conviction and a long-term vision for the health of the vineyard. The château is currently in organic conversion — a process that demands patience and rigour, but one that Mathieu has pursued with evident seriousness across more than a decade.

Terroir: graves, clay-limestone and alluvial soils

The 38 hectares are planted across a mosaic of soil types characteristic of this part of the Gironde. Graves (gravelly soils) provide excellent drainage and warmth, favouring the Cabernet varieties and lending structure to the reds. Argilo-calcaire (clay-limestone) brings freshness and mineral tension, particularly well-suited to Merlot and to the white varieties. A proportion of argile limoneuse (silty clay) adds body and roundness. Together, these soils, worked with increasing care under the organic conversion programme, give the wines a genuine sense of place — something we look for in any Bordeaux we list.

Grape varieties and winemaking approach

The red range draws on Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc — a classic Bordeaux palette with the addition of Malbec, a variety that historically played a significant role in the Gironde before migrating south-west to Cahors. For the whites, Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc are grown on the cooler, clay-limestone plots, producing wines with both aromatic freshness and textural weight. The organic conversion informs every stage of the work in the vineyard: reduced intervention, attention to soil life, and a move away from synthetic treatments.

The wines of Château Majoureau

The château produces two principal colour families under the AOC Bordeaux appellation:

  • Bordeaux Rouge — built on Merlot and the Cabernets, with Malbec adding depth; approachable in youth, with the structure to reward a few years in the cellar.
  • Bordeaux Blanc — Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc; aromatic, fresh, and well-suited to the table from release.

Both ranges reflect the terroir of the Macarian slopes: the reds have a natural freshness that sets them apart from heavier, more extracted Bordeaux styles, while the whites show the mineral character typical of clay-limestone soils on the Garonne's right bank.

Why we have selected Château Majoureau

We have been following Château Majoureau across several vintages, and what has consistently impressed us is the rigour of Mathieu Delong's approach. The organic conversion, begun in 2010, is not a marketing exercise — it is a sustained, decade-long commitment that shows in the health of the vines and the clarity of the wines. The terroir of the coteaux macariens is genuinely interesting: south-facing slopes, a variety of soil types, and the moderating influence of the Garonne all contribute to wines that express their origins honestly.

We recommend Château Majoureau to those who appreciate well-made, terroir-driven Bordeaux at an accessible level — whether for everyday drinking, for stocking a cellar with reliable bottles, or for introducing friends to the diversity of the appellation. The reds pair naturally with roast lamb, duck confit or a simple côte de bœuf; the whites are excellent with grilled fish, goat's cheese or a summer terrine.
