List of products by brand CHATEAU LA GURGUE
Château la Gurgue extends across 10 hectares at the heart of the Margaux appellation, planted on the deep white graves and sandy-gravelly soils that define this celebrated commune of the Gironde. Farmed to Demeter-certified biodynamic standards, it represents one of the most coherent and quietly ambitious projects in the appellation today.
A family château rooted in the history of Margaux
Château la Gurgue was acquired in 1978 by Jacques Merlaut, who found the property in a state of neglect and entrusted its revival to his daughter, Bernadette Villars. Under her direction, the château was progressively restored to its rightful place among the serious producers of the Margaux appellation. When Bernadette and her husband died in an accident in 1992, their daughter Claire Villars-Lurton assumed responsibility for the estate the following year, at the age of just twenty-three. What could have been a rupture became instead a continuation — and, in many respects, a deepening of the family's commitment to this corner of Bordeaux.
Terroir: deep graves at the heart of Margaux
The 10-hectare vineyard sits on a north-east-facing flank and plateau, where deep white gravel and sandy-gravelly subsoils provide the excellent drainage and heat retention that Cabernet Sauvignon demands. These are classic Margaux soils — lean, well-structured, and capable of producing wines of genuine finesse and length. The encépagement reflects this terroir: Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the blend, supported by Merlot for roundness and Petit Verdot for structure and aromatic lift.
Biodynamic viticulture: Demeter-certified
Château la Gurgue holds full certification in organic agriculture and biodynamics, including the Demeter label — the most demanding biodynamic standard in the wine world. Under Claire Villars-Lurton's stewardship, the conversion to biodynamics was not a marketing decision but a considered agronomic one, aimed at restoring soil vitality and sharpening the expression of the Margaux terroir. Preparations are applied according to the biodynamic calendar; the vineyard is worked without synthetic inputs; and the cellar follows the same philosophy of minimal intervention. The result is a wine that speaks clearly of its place.
The wines of Château la Gurgue
The château produces exclusively red wines under the Margaux appellation. The range is deliberately focused, reflecting the estate's conviction that a single terroir, farmed with precision, needs no dilution across multiple cuvées.
- Château la Gurgue (Margaux AOC) — the principal wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend with Merlot and Petit Verdot, combining the silky texture characteristic of Margaux with the grip and longevity that deep-gravel soils confer. A wine suited to patient cellaring.
Why we have selected Château la Gurgue
At Halles Quercamps, we have been listing Château la Gurgue because it represents something increasingly rare in Bordeaux: a small, family-run château that has chosen rigour over volume, and terroir over trend. Three reasons, in particular, guided our selection.
First, the integrity of the biodynamic approach. Demeter certification in Bordeaux remains uncommon, and at Château la Gurgue it reflects a genuine agronomic conviction rather than a commercial positioning. Second, the typicity of the terroir: these deep Margaux graves produce wines of real finesse and definition, and Claire Villars-Lurton's winemaking allows that character to come through without artifice. Third, the human story — a family legacy carried forward with quiet determination across three generations.
We recommend Château la Gurgue to confirmed Bordeaux enthusiasts who value precision and restraint over power. At the table, it pairs beautifully with rack of lamb, roast pigeon, or a well-aged hard cheese.
