List of products by brand CHATEAU LA GOMERIE
Château la Gomerie stands among the most discreet and sought-after red wines of Saint-Émilion: just 2 hectares of pure Merlot, a former monastic enclosure, and a winemaking approach of uncommon precision. We list it with genuine conviction.
A monastic enclosure at the heart of Saint-Émilion
The origins of Château la Gomerie reach back to the Ancien Régime, when this plot formed the enclosed priory vineyard of the Abbaye de Fayse, in the commune of Saint-Émilion, Gironde. The upheaval of the French Revolution reduced the holding to roughly 2.5 hectares, and the site passed through various hands before the Bécot family — already proprietors of the classified growth Beau-Séjour Bécot — acquired it in 1995. Gérard and Dominique Bécot immediately recognised the potential of this intimate parcel and set about realising it with the ambition it deserved.
A terroir of iron and limestone
The vineyard sits on the slopes and at the foot of the coteaux of Saint-Émilion, where two distinct soil types converge. The dominant portion — some 73% of the surface — is sandy clay with notable iron deposits, lending the wines their characteristic density and dark-fruited depth. The remaining 27% is calcaire à astéries, the fossiliferous limestone so prized across the appellation, which contributes freshness and structural precision. Planted exclusively to Merlot, this 2-hectare parcel produces a wine of intense concentration, shaped as much by the particularities of its soil as by the care taken in the vineyard.
A garage wine crafted with Michel Rolland
From the outset, the Bécot family worked alongside the celebrated Pomerol-based oenologist Michel Rolland, whose influence on the garage wine movement of the 1990s was defining. The collaboration produced a wine of remarkable richness and aromatic density — low volumes, meticulous selection, and an approach that placed the expression of terroir above all else. Château la Gomerie quickly earned a devoted following among collectors and serious amateurs of Bordeaux. After 2011, the property was integrated into the broader Beau-Séjour Bécot operation, though the identity of this singular parcel has remained intact.
The wines of Château la Gomerie
The château produces a single wine from its 2-hectare holding:
- Château la Gomerie — Saint-Émilion Grand Cru (rouge): a pure Merlot of deep colour and considerable structure, marked by dark fruit, iron-tinged minerality, and a long, precise finish. A wine built for the cellar, at its finest with several years of bottle age.
Why we have selected Château la Gomerie
Few addresses in Saint-Émilion combine historical depth, terroir singularity, and winemaking pedigree in quite the same way. We have selected this château for three reasons. First, the terroir itself: the combination of ferrous sandy clay and calcaire à astéries on a 2-hectare parcel is genuinely rare, and it shows clearly in the glass. Second, the winemaking lineage: the collaboration with Michel Rolland during the estate's formative years produced a benchmark for what concentrated, terroir-driven Merlot can achieve in Bordeaux. Third, the scarcity: with production limited to a single small parcel, each vintage represents a genuine collector's opportunity. We recommend Château la Gomerie to those who appreciate structured, age-worthy Bordeaux rouge — and who enjoy it alongside a côte de bœuf or a well-aged Comté.
