List of products by brand CHATEAU DE CARLES

Set on the south- and east-facing slopes above the Isle valley at Saillans in the Gironde, Château de Carles covers 19 hectares within the Fronsac appellation, on the clay-limestone and clay-siliceous soils characteristic of the Fronsadais molasse. Built in the fifteenth century, the château has been in the Chastenet de Castaing family since 1900; in 2021, the fifth generation — Oriane Sallé de Chou and Éléonore de Lencquesaing — took the helm and launched a new qualitative chapter, earning HVE certification along the way. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the rigour of that generational renewal, the typicity of its Fronsac terroirs, and the coherence of a blend centred on Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. A Fronsac address well worth watching.

At the heart of the Fronsac appellation, Château de Carles represents six centuries of unbroken viticultural presence on the slopes of Saillans in the Gironde. Since 2021, a new generation has brought fresh ambition to this historic château — and the results are already drawing the attention of serious Bordeaux enthusiasts.

Six centuries on the slopes of Fronsac

Château de Carles was built in the fifteenth century by the de Carles family, making it one of the oldest estates in the Fronsac appellation. The Chastenet de Castaing family acquired the property in 1900, and four successive generations stewarded it through the twentieth century with quiet consistency. In 2021, the fifth generation — Oriane Sallé de Chou and Éléonore de Lencquesaing — assumed responsibility for the château, bringing with them a clear-eyed commitment to quality and a willingness to question inherited practices. This handover marks not a rupture but a deliberate acceleration: the same deep-rooted identity, sharpened by new energy and a more exacting approach in both vineyard and cellar.

Terroir: clay-limestone slopes above the Isle valley

The 19 hectares of Château de Carles occupy the south- and east-facing coteaux that dominate the Isle valley at Saillans, in the Gironde. The soils are a blend of clay-limestone and clay-siliceous formations resting on the molasse du Fronsadais — a sedimentary substratum that gives Fronsac wines their characteristic structure and capacity for ageing. This combination of aspect, elevation and soil complexity is precisely what distinguishes the Fronsac appellation from its more celebrated Libournais neighbours: the wines tend to be firmer in their youth, more mineral in their backbone, and rewarding to those with the patience to wait. The encépagement reflects the terroir faithfully: Merlot provides the fruit and suppleness, Cabernet Franc adds aromatic lift and definition, and Malbec — a variety with deep roots in the South-West — contributes depth and a distinctive inky character.

HVE certification and the new qualitative cycle

Château de Carles holds Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification, the French national framework that recognises estates achieving measurable environmental performance across biodiversity, phytosanitary practices, fertilisation and water management. For the fifth generation, this certification is not a marketing badge but a baseline: the starting point of a longer journey towards greater respect for the soils and the surrounding landscape of Saillans.

The wines of Château de Carles

The château produces exclusively red wines under the Fronsac appellation. The range is built around the estate's clay-limestone and clay-siliceous terroirs, with Merlot as the dominant variety complemented by Cabernet Franc and Malbec.

  • Fronsac rouge — structured, fruit-driven reds with the characteristic mineral backbone of the Fronsadais molasse, suited to medium- to long-term cellaring.

Why we have selected Château de Carles

We have listed Château de Carles for three reasons that matter to us as a family merchant. First, the integrity of the generational transition: Oriane Sallé de Chou and Éléonore de Lencquesaing have taken on a historic property with genuine ambition rather than complacency, and the qualitative direction is already evident. Second, the typicity of the terroir: the clay-limestone slopes of Saillans produce Fronsac wines of real character — structured, mineral, age-worthy — that reward the cellar rather than the impulse buy. Third, the coherence of the approach: HVE certification, a focused encépagement, and a clear sense of place all point in the same direction. We would recommend these wines to enthusiasts who appreciate the Libournais but want to look beyond Saint-Émilion and Pomerol — and to anyone building a cellar with an eye on value and longevity. At the table, these reds are well suited to roast lamb, duck confit, or a well-aged hard cheese.
