The first recorded cultivation of the vine on this estate dates to 1619, when André de Faugères tended the slopes of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse in the Gironde. The property passed to the Esquissaud family in 1823, who held it for well over a century, before the Guisez family took ownership in 1987. In 2005, Swiss collector and entrepreneur Silvio Denz — through his holding company Vignobles Silvio Denz — acquired the château and embarked on a thorough programme of investment, both in the vineyard and in the cellars. The ambition was clear: to restore Château Faugeres to its rightful place among the classified growths of Saint-Émilion. That goal was achieved in 2012, when the château was awarded Grand Cru Classé status, a recognition that reflected the sustained quality of its wines across successive vintages.
Terroir and viticulture: limestone at the heart of everything
The 42-hectare vineyard sits on two principal soil types: calcosols over calcaires à astéries — the pale, fossiliferous limestone so characteristic of Saint-Émilion's plateau and slopes — and clay-limestone hillside soils that lend depth and freshness to the wines. The south-south-east exposure ensures generous ripening across the growing season while preserving the natural acidity that gives structure and ageing potential.
