List of products by brand BAUDRY & DUTOUR
Baudry & Dutour stands today as one of the leading names in the Chinon appellation, farming 120 certified organic hectares across the most expressive terroirs of Cravant-les-Côteaux in Indre-et-Loire, Loire Valley.
Two family legacies, one shared vision
The story of Baudry & Dutour formally begins in 2003, yet its roots reach considerably further back. Christophe Baudry is the sixth generation of a vigneron family whose presence in Cravant-les-Côteaux is documented as far back as 1778, through what was then the Domaine de la Perrière. Jean-Martin Dutour brought his own inheritance to the partnership: the Domaine du Roncée, another established name in the Chinonais. Rather than a simple merger, their association in 2003 represented a deliberate pooling of complementary terroirs, complementary temperaments, and a shared conviction that Chinon deserved to be taken as seriously as any other great Loire appellation.
A growing estate: Château de La Grille and beyond
The estate's ambition did not stop at the founding partnership. In 2009, Baudry & Dutour acquired the historic Château de La Grille, a classified Chinon property of considerable reputation, adding further depth and prestige to the range. A decade later, in 2020, three additional domaines in neighbouring Loir-et-Cher were brought into the fold, extending the estate's reach while preserving the individual identity of each site. Today, the 120 hectares under vine represent one of the most substantial organic holdings in the appellation.
Terroir, soils and organic commitment
The vineyards of Baudry & Dutour sit on the characteristic éperons calcaires — the limestone spurs — that define the Chinonais landscape. Three distinct soil types shape the wines: tuffeau calcaire (the soft, chalky limestone that gives Chinon its most mineral, age-worthy reds), argilo-siliceous gravels (producing wines of elegance and early aromatic expression), and argilo-calcaire (clay-limestone, lending structure and depth). Exposures run from east to south, maximising ripeness for Cabernet Franc — the appellation's signature grape — and Chenin Blanc for the estate's white and sparkling wines. Certified under both Agriculture Biologique and HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale), the estate's approach in the vineyard is one of genuine rigour rather than mere compliance.
The wine range at Baudry & Dutour
The estate produces a complete range across all four colours, each reflecting a specific terroir expression within the Chinon appellation:
- Red Chinon — the heart of the range, from gravel-based cuvées of freshness and finesse to tuffeau-driven wines built for the cellar
- White Chinon — Chenin Blanc vinified with care, offering the appellation's characteristic tension between richness and mineral acidity
- Rosé Chinon — dry and precise, a style that rewards the table as much as the aperitif
- Sparkling Chinon — a less familiar face of the appellation, made from Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc, lively and food-friendly
Why we have selected Baudry & Dutour
At Halles Quercamps, we have been listing Baudry & Dutour for the consistency and intellectual honesty of their approach. Three things set this estate apart in our view. First, the organic certification across the full 120 hectares is not a recent marketing decision: it reflects a long-standing commitment to the health of soils that have been cultivated by the Baudry family for nearly two and a half centuries. Second, the diversity of terroirs — tuffeau, gravels, clay-limestone — gives the range a genuine breadth that rewards exploration: there is a Baudry & Dutour wine for the cellar and one for the table tonight. Third, the wines express Cabernet Franc with a clarity and a sense of place that we find increasingly rare. We would particularly recommend the estate's tuffeau-based reds to anyone building a Loire cellar with an eye on the medium to long term. At table, think roasted guinea fowl, a rack of lamb, or a well-aged Sainte-Maure de Touraine.
