Château d'Arsac stands as one of the most compelling stories of renewal in the Bordeaux vineyard. Acquired in 1986 by Philippe Raoux in a state of near-total abandonment, this Margaux château has rebuilt itself from the ground up — and earned back its appellation the hard way.

A domaine rebuilt from ruin

When Philippe Raoux took over Château d'Arsac in 1986, the property was in a sorry state: three hectares of vines, crumbling buildings, and an appellation long since lost. What followed was a decade of meticulous reconstruction — replanting the vineyard parcel by parcel, restoring the cellars, and painstakingly making the case to the INAO for the reinstatement of the AOC Margaux designation. In 1995, that case was accepted. The INAO granted Château d'Arsac the right to reclaim the Margaux appellation — a decision without modern precedent, and a testament to the rigour with which Raoux had rebuilt the estate. Today, the château extends across 54 hectares in the commune of Arsac, Gironde, at the southern tip of the Margaux appellation.

Terroir: sandy-gravelly ridges on the Médoc plateau

The soils at Château d'Arsac are characteristic of the finest Margaux terroir: sandy-gravelly ridges — croupes — with a thin clay substratum that provides just enough water retention to temper the free-draining gravel above. This structure encourages deep root development in the principal grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, producing wines of definition and length rather than weight. Yields are held to 45 hl/ha, a discipline that underpins the concentration and character of the wines across all three colours produced at the estate.
