The origins of Château Citran reach back to 1235, when the lordship of Avensan first took shape in the Médocain landscape. For nearly six hundred years the estate remained in the hands of the Donissan family — a continuity that speaks to the depth of its roots in Bordeaux. In 1996, the famille Merlaut, through the Groupe Taillan, took ownership, bringing the experience of one of Bordeaux's most capable négociant families. Their investment has been methodical, focused on expressing the terroir of Avensan rather than imposing a house style. The château was listed as a monument historique in 2012.

A terroir of gravel and clay at Avensan

The 100-hectare vineyard sits on a mosaic of soils characteristic of the best Haut-Médoc sites. Pure graves dominate the higher, better-drained parcels, providing the warmth Cabernet Sauvignon demands. Sandy-gravelly and clay-gravel soils add complexity, while argilo-calcaire patches bring mineral freshness and ageing potential. Avensan sits between Moulis and Margaux, benefiting from Atlantic influence and the thermal mass of the Gironde estuary. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc are each matched to the parcel best suited to their needs.

The château produces two colours under the Haut-Médoc appellation:

• Red — built on Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, offering structure, dark fruit, and the mineral backbone of Avensan's gravel soils; suited to medium-to-long cellaring.
• Rosé — a less common offering for the appellation, bringing freshness and approachability to the range.
