List of products by brand CHATEAU CARLMAGNUS

Set on the limestone plateaux above the town of Fronsac in the Gironde, Château Carlmagnus farms 38 hectares of Merlot on naturally drained argilo-calcaire soils, certified organic since 2020. Founded in 1953 by Ernest Roux under the name Carolus, the château passed to Arnaud Roux-Oulié in 1998 — third generation, who renamed it Carlmagnus at the age of twenty and committed to organic viticulture from 2020 onwards. At Halles Quercamps, we have selected this château for the rigour of its farming, the consistency of its organic approach, and the honest, terroir-driven character its wines draw from one of Fronsac's most distinctive plateau sites. A Bordeaux address we recommend with confidence.

Château Carlmagnus has established itself as one of the most serious addresses in the Fronsac appellation. Managed since 1998 by Arnaud Roux-Oulié across 38 hectares of limestone plateau above the town of Fronsac, this certified organic château produces red Bordeaux of real character and precision.

A family estate with deep roots in Fronsac

The story of Château Carlmagnus begins in 1953, when Ernest Roux — Arnaud's grandfather — established the estate under the name Carolus. That name was eventually set aside for legal reasons, but the family's attachment to this corner of the Gironde never wavered. When Arnaud Roux-Oulié took over in 1998 at the age of twenty, he created the Carlmagnus name and brought a new generation's ambition to a property already shaped by decades of careful viticulture. His arrival marked not a break with the past but a deepening of it: the same soils, the same commitment to quality, but with a sharper focus on sustainable and ultimately organic farming. The conversion to agriculture biologique was formalised in 2020, a decision that reflects both personal conviction and a clear-eyed reading of what Fronsac's terroir demands.

Limestone plateaux and the Fronsac terroir

Fronsac sits on the right bank of the Dordogne, just west of Saint-Émilion, and remains one of Bordeaux's less celebrated appellations — which is precisely part of its appeal. The 38 hectares of Château Carlmagnus occupy elevated limestone plateaux that dominate the town of Fronsac itself, with naturally drained argilo-calcaire soils that encourage the vine to work for its water and nutrients. Yields are kept to 40–45 hl/ha, a discipline that concentrates flavour without forcing the wine. The plateau exposure lends the wines a freshness and definition that distinguishes them from the richer, more opulent styles found on heavier clay soils nearby. Merlot is the sole variety planted here, well suited to the limestone subsoil and capable of producing wines of both generosity and structure when farmed with care.

Organic certification and approach in the vineyard

Since 2020, Château Carlmagnus has been fully certified under agriculture biologique. The shift to organic farming was a considered, progressive one, driven by Arnaud Roux-Oulié's conviction that the estate's limestone terroir expresses itself most faithfully when the soil is alive and chemical inputs are absent. Work in the vineyard is guided by the rhythms of the growing season rather than a prescriptive calendar, with an emphasis on soil health, canopy management, and the natural resilience of the vine.

The wines of Château Carlmagnus

The château produces exclusively red wines under the Fronsac appellation, vinified from Merlot grown on the limestone plateau.

  • Fronsac Rouge — the estate's principal red, combining the plum and dark cherry fruit characteristic of Merlot with the mineral tension and freshness that the limestone plateau imparts. Structured for the medium term, with the balance to reward several years in the cellar.

Why we have selected Château Carlmagnus

At Halles Quercamps, we are drawn to producers who work with conviction and without compromise, and Château Carlmagnus fits that description precisely. Three generations of the Roux family have farmed this plateau, and Arnaud Roux-Oulié's decision to pursue organic certification is the most recent expression of a long-standing commitment to the land. The yields — held at 40–45 hl/ha — speak to a refusal to chase volume at the expense of quality. And Fronsac itself, often overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbours, offers remarkable value for the serious Bordeaux enthusiast: genuine terroir character at prices that remain accessible.

We recommend these wines to lovers of right-bank Bordeaux who appreciate structure and minerality alongside fruit, and to those building a cellar with an eye for quality rather than label. At the table, the Fronsac rouge pairs naturally with roast lamb, duck confit, or a well-aged hard cheese.
