A gravel terroir at the heart of Moulis-en-Médoc

Moulis-en-Médoc is one of the six communal appellations of the Médoc and, for that reason, one of the most rewarding to explore: less celebrated than Pauillac or Saint-Julien, it offers structured, age-worthy reds at prices that still make sense for the cellar. Château Brillette occupies a particularly favoured position on the western fringe of the appellation, where the land rises in gentle croupes of fine and coarse gunzian graves — the same Quaternary deposits that underpin the great estates further north. Beneath this free-draining gravel lies a subsoil of marl and clay that retains just enough moisture to sustain the vines through dry summers. The estate covers 35 hectares, a coherent block that allows for consistent vineyard management across the three varieties planted: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

Nearly two and a half centuries of continuous viticulture

The history of Château Brillette stretches back to 1796, making it one of the older continuously cultivated properties in the Médoc. Its quality was recognised early: the château appeared in the Guide Féret in 1874, the authoritative Bordeaux reference of the era, and was formally classified Cru Bourgeois Supérieur in 1932. The Flageul family acquired the property in 1975 and stewarded it for nearly five decades, maintaining its standing within the appellation. In 2023, Château Chasse-Spleen — itself one of the most respected names in Moulis, owned by the Merlaut-Villars family — took over the château. This change of ownership is significant: the Merlaut-Villars family brings both the financial resources and the winemaking culture to take Château Brillette to the next level, without departing from the terroir-driven approach that has always defined it.

HVE certification and a commitment to responsible viticulture

Château Brillette holds Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification, the French government's highest environmental standard for agricultural holdings. This covers biodiversity, plant protection strategy, fertilisation management and water resource management. For us, HVE is a meaningful indicator of a producer's seriousness about the land — not a marketing badge, but a verifiable commitment audited by an independent body. Combined with the new direction's technical ambitions, it gives us confidence in the estate's trajectory.

The wines of Château Brillette

The château produces red wines under the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation, assembled from the estate's three varieties in proportions that vary with each vintage. The style is classic Médoc: structured, with the backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon, the roundness of Merlot, and the spice and colour depth that Petit Verdot contributes in favourable years. Third, the Cru Bourgeois Supérieur pedigree, confirmed since 1932, provides a reliable benchmark of quality within the appellation.
