A terroir of graves at the heart of the Haut-Médoc

Macau occupies a strategic position within the Haut-Médoc, where the well-drained ridges and deep gravel soils — graves profondes — provide ideal conditions for the slow, even ripening that defines the finest wines of the Left Bank. The château's 15 hectares sit on a croupe directly adjoining Château Giscours, one of the Margaux classified growths, which speaks volumes about the quality of the immediate neighbourhood. This proximity is not merely geographical: the two properties share comparable drainage characteristics and a similar exposition on the gentle slopes of the commune. In the Bordeaux wine region, terroir of this calibre is the foundation on which everything else is built, and at Château Belle-Vue it is treated accordingly.

History and ownership: from family project to international portfolio

The château was founded in 1996, a relatively recent creation by Médoc standards, but one that quickly found its footing. In 2004, Vincent Mulliez acquired the property and set about refining both the vineyard management and the winemaking approach. Following his death in 2010, his wife Isabelle continued to oversee the estate with the same commitment to quality. That continuity of vision was rewarded in 2020 when the château was classified Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel — the highest tier in the revised Cru Bourgeois classification, awarded only to a small number of properties across the Haut-Médoc. In November 2021, the château was acquired by Treasury Wine Estates, the Australian group best known for the Penfolds brand. The transition has been managed carefully, preserving the identity and standards that earned the classification in the first place.

Viticulture and certification

Château Belle-Vue holds HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale), France's national framework for environmentally responsible viticulture. This reflects a considered approach to vineyard management: reduced chemical inputs, attention to biodiversity, and a long-term view of soil health.
