A château with deep roots: from 1882 to the Durantou era

The origins of Château l'Église-Clinet reach back to 1882, when the property was established by M. Mauléon-Rouchut. For much of the following century it remained a respected but relatively discreet presence within Pomerol. That changed decisively in 1983, when Denis Durantou took over the château and set about transforming it into one of the appellation's most admired producers. His approach was uncompromising: low yields, meticulous attention to the vineyard, and a refusal to sacrifice character for volume. Over the following decades, Château l'Église-Clinet earned a reputation that extended well beyond France, becoming a reference point for collectors and serious amateurs seeking the truest expression of Pomerol.

Denis Durantou's death in May 2020 marked the end of an era, but not of the estate's ambitions. His wife Marie Reilhac and their daughters Alix, Noémie and Constance Durantou assumed stewardship of the château, bringing both continuity and a renewed sense of purpose. The family's commitment to the standards Denis established remains absolute.

Terroir: clay, iron and the plateau of Pomerol

The 4 hectares of Château l'Église-Clinet sit on some of the most distinctive soils in the appellation. The surface is composed of clay and gravelly clay, underlain by a deep subsoil of pure clay enriched with crasse de fer — the iron-rich hardpan that is a hallmark of Pomerol's finest terroirs and a key contributor to the structure and longevity of the wines produced here. The plateau position, with its gentle exposure to the north of the Saint-Jean church, ensures good drainage while retaining the moisture that Merlot in particular requires to ripen evenly and fully.

Yields are capped at a strict 35 hl/ha — a deliberate choice that concentrates flavour and preserves the vineyard's natural balance. The grape varieties planted reflect Pomerol's traditional palette: Merlot dominates, complemented by Cabernet Franc, which adds structure, aromatic complexity and the capacity for extended cellaring.

The winemaking philosophy at Château l'Église-Clinet has always been one of restraint and precision. The intention is to allow the terroir — those deep clays and iron-rich subsoils — to speak as clearly as possible, without the intervention of heavy-handed technique.
